I jsut take my foot off the gas and pop it back into drive.

Nothing's worse than when I was learning to downshift in a manual. 5-2 downshift at 55 MPH.

Just lift off the gas and put it back in "D", that should be good enough. It's certainly not the best thing you can do to a transmission, but it's far from the worst.

just pop it back to D, no need to rev match, it will do it itself. How can Automatic be complicated?

Like trying to powershift a Dodge Aries, getting it wrong, ending up in R while traveling at around 30mph?

I was a passenger for this event, lots of great "ball-bearings in a coffee can" audio.

Revmatch to what? Automatics always drop the RPMs to a bit above neutral when you don't have your foot on the gas anyways, especially with overdrive on.

Sure it will. And there is no need to rev match. The torque converter will handle that.

I do it sometimes, I think I am in Manumatic mode and pop it into N by accident, I just take my foot off the gas and put it back into D

No. Hydraulics in the transmission will select the closest gear for the vehicle and engine speed when going back to drive (eg: probably highest gear if RPM fell back to idle at 60 mph), and the clutch bands and torque converter will slip the remainder of the RPM mismatch.

No worries about going back into D from N while at speed. It will work with no issues whatever.
As to downshifts, you should go gear by gear, say from D to 3, then 3 to 2, then 3 to 1 (or Low)

technically the forward clutches aren't generally intended to engage with the output shaft moving. but like everyone else said, it's not going to hurt anything. worst case, it puts an infitismal amount of extra wear on the friction material, but there are other friction members in your trans that engage and disengage at speed all the time and are surviving.

now, redlining the engine before your drop it in gear, not a great idea. stopped, even less (neutral drops cac actually brake metal parts with the shock load).

i'll say this - at low speeds, my car does not like it (VW passat tiptronic). it makes a nasty clunk sound going from N to D. i've done it on accident a few times thinking i was in tiptronic when i wasn't. i'm sorry baby :(

In absolutely idiotic moment as a teenager I was trying to save gas by dropping it into neutral when I was going down hill in a jeep cherokee (yes, I know, it doesn't save any gas, didn't know that back then) and I stuck it into reverse going about 70 mph. I just ended up stalling. The car ran great for years after that until some moron stole it and crashed it into a wall. The AW4 was a great transmission.

did it actually lock the reverse clutches (and the wheels) while you were driving? that'd be pretty awesome in a pant-shitting kind of way.
