Going international... the tickets I'm finding are cheaper roundtrip than one way (what I need) so I'm curious.

Situation:
I purchase a roundtrip with Delta (as an example) go to my destination and remain there. Does the airline adjust the price to reflect a one way and charge you more or just ignores it?

I would guess they just ignore it.

Is it really cheaper to buy a round-trip ticket than a one-way?

Airlines have been cracking down on that type of thing. You might get away with it, or they might catch you and adjust the price.

I'm not coming back at all. Spending a year or more at my destination and then going to another country. Problem is, it's kind of short notice (August 19-21) so roundtrip comes out cheaper @ $1033 compared to the same exact flight (same plane, time, airports, etc etc) around $1980 one way.

edit: This is searching on travelocity. (I've scoured many sites so far and this is the best I could find.)

Usually a ticket can be used for up to 1 year after the scheduled data.

You will have change fees and fare differences to pay if/when used.

Some airlines will force it to be the same flight (departure/arrival locations) others may have some more flexability in terms of "use/credit".

Depends on the airlines.
