Youvegottabefrigginkiddingme.com

My girlfriend's dad has been having some problems with his Gateway PC (it's only about 2 year old). It's something like a P4 2.2 or 2.4 with a 40 or 60GB hard drive.

He uses it JUST for surfing the web and email. And he may print stuff for work every once in a while to his AIO printer.

Well, anyway, he calls me up last week and said that his computer was going bonkers. He has a bunch of virii and it was screwing up his machine (going to those damn online casino sites). I tried to talk him through virus removal over the phone and tried to get him to install Microsoft Antispyware, but it wouldn't even let him install it.

So I told him to copy his documents over to a couple of floppies (he only has a few documents) and do the Gateway system restore (which he has done before)...or he could just wait until I came into town this Friday so that I could remove the infections from his system/clean install Windows if need be and his system would be as good as new. He says OK.

So I'm talking to my GF today and she tells me that her dad just got off the phone and bought a brand new Dell machine b/c his computer is broken!!! WTF!!!:|:|:|:|:|

Words can not express the frustration:disgust:

You'll have a nice backup machine if so :)

Let it go man. Its way too easy to waste a lot of energy over other people's stupidity/ignorance.

I was trying to save the guy money. I was gonna fix his computer for him. It would have been as good as new.

It just kills me...

But I digress, I'll let it go ;)

friends don't let friends fix other friends computers

edit: in fact, friends should help friends hide any knowledge of computers from other friends

Why do you care? It's his money...

Here's my suggestion for you:

1) Take off your pants
2) Un-bunch the panties that are all scrunched up in your ass
3) ...
4) Profit

No. Known the guy for 6 years. I'm pretty much in the family now.

If your son came home and said "dad, my car is broken" and you say "what is it son?" and it's just needs an oil change...
then your son goes out and buys a new car...

Sure, the scale is a little off, but it's pretty much the same thing. Something that is normal maintainance and can be done easily not being done in liu for buying a new computer (one he probally doesn't need to boot)... i'd be annoyed to. You can't blame the guy for trying to help out his loved ones...

but *shrugs* perhaps 5 angry faces is a bit overboard ;)

I love the guy like a father and I try to help him out in any way I can, and for him to go out and spend money when he didn't have to is just disheartening.

I'd feel the same way if it were my own dad.

Haha, I used a similar expression with my GF. I told her:

"Let's say you're driving down the street and your car runs out of gas. But instead of asking for someone to give you a lift to the gas station to get a can of gas, you go out and buy a brand new car instead. That's what your dad just did" :p

Now that the damage is done you can help minimize it in the future.

You KNOW this will happen again in a few months.

1) Reformat the Dell and do a clean XP Home install.
2) Ghost.

I hope he at least got in on a Hot Deal? The Dimension 4700 + 17" LCD from Dell SB is a good deal.

:)
