I just found the best store ever. It's a bakery that sells only gourmet cupcakes, and they are ridiculously awesome. I mean just look at this:

The only downside is that I think it is a brand new business and is local only for now.

local is not a downside, unless you plan on moving very soon.

Looks good, but these gourmet cupcake places are a dime a dozen these days.

Is it some sort of new fad? I've never seen such a place before :p

i bought $2 cupcakes once. then i suddenly realized i could make several pans of cupcakes for what they charge. with a little effort and attention to detail, i can surpass the quality of a cupcake boutique.

Yes it is. They are popping up everywhere, or even if there is not a full dedicated shop the gourmet cupcakes themselves are showing up in coffee shops everywhere.

Not a bad thing, but very common.

Crumbs make the best cupcakes. I think Magnolia's is what started it all but Crumbs cupcakes are a lot bigger and so full of diabetes inducing goodness.

Starbucks is starting to catch on to this trend so you can go there and try their poor imitation if there isn't a gourmet cupcake place around you area.

Indeed, especially in the DC area (I know the OP's place is somewhere on Route 7, but too lazy to see how far out west). Pretty sure one of the local papers is doing a March Madness with local cupcake boutiques... srsly.

Oh it was not intended as an insult at all, in fact I sort of envy that lifestyle sometimes.

We just got a Five Guys here, so we are catching up to you! :p

there are a couple popping up around me, but they are HORRIBLE. tried 3 or 4 cupcakes and I couldn't take more than a bite out of each. not sure if we caught them on a bad day or what, because i just hear a new one is opening up, but i'd be hesitant to even go back

They're all over the seattle area- never actually had a "gourmet" cupcake though...

This craze has even hit sleepy little Victoria. There are several cupcake shops here.

Haven't tried them yet as I would rather get my calories from a bacon cheeseburger than a cupcake, but they do seem to be popular for now.

Putting a giant glob of frosting on a cupcake is not necessarily a good thing. What does the cake portion of the equation taste like? That is key?

Also, I think Lollibakes are probably the best (sort of a cupcake on a stick).

Totally agree. I'm not much of a cake guy really (pie FTMFW), but one of the cupcake places around here has a pretty damn good cake. A new joint called Big City Cupcakes opened down the street from my work and we tried one, but the cake was dry and chalky. Not good at all.
