Its also a bulkhead, furdown or chase. I worked in architecture and construction for a while and all are used although regional differences may come into play

That's how I've heard the words used in my area.Around here chases go up and down, bulkheads are for something in the middle of the ceiling and soffitts go around the perimeter of a ceiling. I think hes correct thats a soffitt.
