I'm by no means an expert but ive been using progressively larger steel tape knives on each coat which seems to work well in terms of keeping it smooth. Dont reuse compound. If it comes out of the bucket it goes on the wall or trash. If i notice compound is starting to dry in the mud pan i stop and clean the pan so i dont get debris ruining a smooth coat. Only do one side of a corner at a time. Takes longer due to drying times but it saves on annoying to fix mistakes if your form isnt good.

Bought a small (980 sqft.) house in '08 and had to pretty much re-drywall the whole house. I was a whole lot better at slinging mud by the time I was done than when I started. Fun? I'll say you can learn to enjoy anything you get good at.

Its also a bulkhead, furdown or chase. I worked in architecture and construction for a while and all are used although regional differences may come into play

Around here chases go up and down, bulkheads are for something in the middle of the ceiling and soffitts go around the perimeter of a ceiling. I think hes correct thats a soffitt.

That's how I've heard the words used in my area.

Since I feel like being technical a soffitt can be on the perimeter of one wall. If you do the entire perimeter of a room we call that a tray ceiling.
