OMG..WTF is up with coffee?

Try drinking coffee black next time.

I tried it initially black and then added cream and sweetener. When I make coffee for guests I use 2tbsp per cup, but maybe that is just too strong for a newbie. I'll tinker around with the ratios.

Flavored seltzer water is good. I also like plain German seltzer/mineral water. Imo, it's better than Italian.

Yeah, I'll look around for something. I would like something with caffeine, but I'm not sure I can find something with carbonation and no carbs, and still have it drinkable, so something will have to give.

Also how in the world do you drink coffee cold? That is nasty.

Come to think of it, this wasnt the first time I've had coffee. I've had iced mochas/lattes before, which is why I thought cold would be the way to go. I just dont like hot drinks. I even drink hot chocolate luke warm. But cold brewing coffee was supposed to smooth out the taste.

1 tbsp per cup is much better for a new coffee drinker. It will be drinkable black even if you don't take to the taste right away. Hot is better as you'll sip and learn to appreciate it more rather than gulp it down. If you are drinking single-origin coffee and not a blend you'll also be able to pick out subtle flavors over time.

You drank too much or used WAY too big of a coffee scoop.

Enjoy your headache tomorrow because you just peed away your excess sodium and blood volume.

2tbsp per cup is DOUBLE concentrated. I use 1 level tbsp.

For some even that had to be learned...

I use to drink coffee, not that I liked it, but it progressively started to taste worse until I was nearly vomiting... at which point I switched to caffeine pills.

I feel like crap now! lol I might even go home and take a nap to sleep it off. Unfortunately I made another batch this morning that will be ready tomorrow, but I should probably just throw it out and start over. Reduce the amount of coffee and maybe even the brewing time. I worked at a coffee shop in college and we always did 2 tbsp per cup, and that ratio always stuck with me when I made it for others.

As I was sitting on the toilet for the third time I looked this up, and its not even conclusive that caffeine is a diuretic. And I literally drink a minimum of 6 cokes a day, so I dont see why this would be all that different. But apparently coffee is a known laxative...just not sure why this have never come up in conversation.

I added cream and lots of Erithyol (3 tbsp) to make it drinkable.

Erythritol can have laxative effects at high doses. 😉
Coffee will allow you to go poo easier too.

Use splenda or sugar instead.

I drink warm coffee in the AM, with sugar and enough milk to cool it off so it doesn't burn my mouth. 😉

Coffee tastes good if you have good coffee.
Beer tastes good if you have good beer.

The rest of you are wrong!

I usually drink my coffee black. Don't even have creamer at home. At work sometimes I'll put some creamer in but that's partially because the person who makes the coffee there in the morning tends to make it a little too strong and it isn't great coffee lol.

Never had a laxative effect. I drink a minimum of 2L of coffee per day, sometimes more. Makes me pee, but that's it.

Yep...I'm a 2 pot man myself...never less than 2 pots of coffee daily...and 3 pots isn't unusual.

When I was working, I left the house with at least 2 quarts of coffee in thermos bottles...plus 2 travel mugs full.
Working on a barge, we always had a coffee pot full of hot, strong, black coffee.

I would rather sit on the toilet 3 times a day. Regardless whether you acquire a taste for coffee or not, you should do something about drinking so much coke.

I don't see how people drink coffee. Period. Bleh. Not a taste I ever aquired...pretty much like beer. Neither taste "good". I believe no one grows up liking the taste of either, they just 'learn' to like it due to the side effects and forgot how bad they actually taste (like smoking - something else I never got into - in any form). I know I know, and I'm even Irish/German.

Your Ancestors must be spinning in their graves 🙂

It's normal, if I drink coffee I usually drink water after since I don't like having the aftertaste, that basically turbo boosts the peeing. I have to go like every 15 minutes for a good part of the day, or all day if I have another one, kinda ridiculous.

Also how in the world do you drink coffee cold? That is nasty.
Iced coffee is pretty good the wife likes it.

Not the same thing really.

Not my usual thing, I like using the Aeropress just below boiling, why I use a tea pot these days personally.

Anything diet keep it away from me 🙂

hehe, thats why I tried to switch to coffee. And theres also dealing with CRV and recycling the cans. While coffee is not necessarily good for you, I figured I could control the additives to make the health impact minimal.

This made my day.

Yes, it's a simple life.

Coffee is kind of like seafood. If you think all seafood has a "fishy" taste, you don't know good seafood.

My parents brought some fresh Blue Mountain coffee from a trip Jamaica. I never realized coffee could be that smooth with no bitterness , nothing offensive at all.

Alton Brown does not agree:

Use enough coffee. The golden ratio for drip or press coffee brewing: 2 heaping tablespoons ground coffee for each 6 ounces fresh water. It’s a popular misconception that brewing with less coffee will give you a “lighter” brew. This is not so. Brewing with less coffee most-often results in over-extraction of the bean, and that’s what leads to bitterness. If you like weak coffee, brew full strength, then cut it in the cup with hot water. Caffeine levels drop as the roast level darkens.

I doubt the perfect solute:solvent ratio just happens to be measured in tablespoons, and I haven't noticed 1 tablespoon being much more bitter than using two. Generally, though, I prefer to use ~1 1/2 tbsp for medium roast coffee. Occasionally it will be more than that, depending on the type of coffee. I don't know if somewhere a researcher has determined that to be overextracted - it may well be, supposedly 1:16 or thereabouts is ideal - but it works for me.

He also uses salt for his coffee to reduce bitterness, which is a flavor enhancing trick I don't think is necessary (your already get a ton of salt in packaged foods for the same reason, why take additional salt unnecessarily?).

I knew a woman that worked night shift. She would add a little salt in with the coffee before brewing. She said it helped remove some of the bitter taste when the pot would stay on the warming pad for a long time.

I work nights as well. If you don't have the option of making fresh coffee, yeah, I can see why reducing the bitterness with salt would be desireable. Coffee that is warmed for a long time can taste very bad. I even prefer instant (Nescafe Taster's Choice) over coffee that's been sitting on the pad for hours.

LOL i am on the same boat as you. I usually find myself going to the bathroom in a couple hours after i have finished drinking my coffee.

Erithyol doesnt have a laxative effect, at least its not supposed to. I usually only use it in pancakes, so maybe it does have an effect on me and I just didnt know it. I had two cups of coffee, at probably 12oz a serving, and 3tbsp of Erithyol per serving. Not sure how much heavy whipping cream I used...enough to lighten the color by half. After reading the comments, this coffee experiment might have been an accidental worst case scenario for a first time.

FYI - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17484374

The ingestion of a sufficiently large amount of non-digestible and/or non-absorbable sugar substitutes causes overt diarrhea. The objective is to estimate the non-effective dosage that does not cause transitory diarrhea for xylitol, lactitol, and erythritol in healthy subjects. Twenty-seven males and 28 females gave informed and written consent to participate, were selected, and participated in the study. The oral dose levels of xylitol were 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 g, while those of lactitol were 10, 20, 30, and 40 g. Those of erythritol were 20, 30, 40 and 50 g. The test substance was ingested in 150 mL of water 2-3 h after a meal. The ingestion order progressed from the smallest to larger amounts, and stopped at the dose that caused diarrhea, or at the largest dose level to be set up. The non-effective dose level of xylitol was 0.37 g/kg B.W. for males and 0.42 g/kg B.W. for females. That of lactitol was 0.25 g/kg B.W. for males and 0.34 g/kg B.W. for females, and that of erythritol was 0.46 g/kg B.W. for males and 0.68 g/kg B.W. for females. These results appear reasonable, because xylitol is poorly absorbed from the small intestine, and the absorption rate is less than that of erythritol, while lactitol is not hydrolyzed. Non-digestible and/or non-absorbable sugar alcohols and oligosaccharides with beneficial health effects inevitably cause overt diarrhea. The estimation of the non-effective dose level of these sugar substitutes is essential and important to produce processed foods that the consumer can use safely and with confidence.
Those were determined to be the non-effective dose for causing diarrhea.
