This Opteron Desktop has been around a lot longer than the Boxx, and is much cheaper than a G5. They actually had sub-$1400 Opteron machines at this site before the dual proc one listed now.

Yes, I know the ads list it as a "workstation", but I always thought the primary distinction between a desktop and a server/workstation was the pricing for business idiots, which makes the G5 more of a "workstation", heh.

Edit: The single-proc Opteron is still there, just no longer linked directly from their main page.

Did you read the specs? It has a top of the line TNT2 video card! WOOT!

AMD press release proclaims the Athlon64 the first desktop 64bit processor to be released. It is not going to be released until September 23. I guess AMD doesn't consider the Opteron a Desktop CPU, and they forgot about the G5!

AMD Press Release

OK, now the shoe is on the other foot. Lets hear some backpedaling!

AMD Press Release
Well, I guess it depends on how you read it:

"The upcoming AMD Athlon 64 processor will be the world's first and only 64-bit desktop and notebook PC processor featuring the compatibility and performance offered by the AMD64 architecture."

There is currently no G5 PPC 970 notebook CPU. So the Clawhammer Athlon 64 would be the first CPU that would come in both desktop and notebook flavours. Plus, the title of the press release specifies "first and only 64-bit x86 desktop and notebook PC processor".

By the way, I consider Clawhammer Athlon 64 to be Apple's true 64-bit competitor. And from these benches I'm guessing that a 2.0 GHz G5 might be faster on average for scientific apps and video than the 1.6 GHz Clawhammer 2800+. OTOH, Clawhammer gaming should be great (at least with UT2003).

THis is the stupidest disscussion I have seen in a while. Obviously the guy was an idiot..and you people are still quoting him.

I am really not a mac fanboy, but I will say their machine looks really nice. I have no need for it, but it seems like it competes with BOXX's offerings...I can't say the same for their opteron machine as I don't have any details.

I don't know how any $3000 dual processor machine wouldn't be described as a workstation. If you're buying that, you either have too much money or you use it for professional purposes such as video work, design, media production.

That is not a machine for surfing the net, listening to mp3s, writing word docs, and playing video games.

Calling it a desktop while claiming dual processor PCs aren't is just marketing BS.

I think Apple's reasoning is that AMD is aiming their Opteron at the "Workstation" and server market, not the home-user or business-user market; whereas the Athlon-64 is aimed at the home/business market.

Apple, on the other hand, is aiming the G5 chip at both markets.

I'm not saying their right... just my opinion on what they're thinking.

If we're talking simply price, then a top level Alienware machine should be called a "workstation" too, since they can be configured to cost nearly as much as a PowerMac G5.
