I live right next to the US border and know a few people across the line. Anyway, relatives of some Yank I know work in a plant that manufactures KitKats in the US. When these relatives visit, they usually make a point to cross the border to get some Canadian KitKats. They seem to prefer the Canadian ones.

The US is strange. There you can get probably the best of anything if you look really hard and pay big bucks. Anything that's affordable though, is usually crap compared to other places. Chocolate, beer, and cheese are 3 things I can say that truly suck for the average Yank.

Generally what most of you are reffering to is a difference in the chocolate that can be attributed to the geographic position of america. In general european chocolates are much sweeter and contain much more cream than american chocolates because when the europeans were introduced to chocolate they sweetened it. Because america was closer to the origin of chocolate and the Native american's drank a chocolate drink that was completely unsweetened (often compared to coffee on the bitter scale) and in fact is still drank in central and southern america, as a result the taste for chocolate in america tends to be more bitter. Europeans tend to complain incesently about eating chocolate in a much purer form. Myself I like my chocolate at best semi-sweet, that smooth sweet crap is only good every once in a while. Of course this is just my unsubstainated opinion...

I think the biggest problem is that US chocolate makers want the stuff to be hard a room temperature (and above), whereas good chocolate is MUCH softer. When I want good, cheap chocolate I get Icee squars (sp?). You get them at Jasons Deli
