OMG, what did Sid Meier do with CivIII? It's utterly horrible!

What a stinking, unplayable mess Civilization III is.... it's nothing at all like its predecesors, the interface is terrible, and the play of the game has only a hint of what made CivI and II great. Don't get me wrong, i'm one of the biggest fans of the series up to now, but this newest version is a steaming pile of crap, IMHO. Am i alone in thinking this, or are there other Civ fans out there who feel almost betrayed by the latest treatment of the classic Civilization series?

CivIII was awesome. I think the interface is greatly optimized. Are you sure you're playing CivIII and not Alpha Centauri?

You're just now finding that out?
Here's a review I wrote at pcgamereview in december

General/Summary: Terrible when compared with Civ I, CivII or Alpha C with better graphics.
Gameplay: The game started out really great but once the eye candy wore off I was left bored and angry I wasted $79.99 on this game. What wonders had I built? I don't know without having to go to each city screen, scroll down and see if it had a wonder built! What does library do? The only way to find out is close the city screen then call up the civilopedia scrool and hunt till you find it then read the description. Next .close the civilopedia, go find the city you where at, open city screen then select the building you desire. VERY TEDIOUS! The main problem with this game is Brain Reynolds left as the main man and it has gone down hill as far as game play is conserned. Do you think an archer from the 12th century could take a an A1 abrams tank? Well in this game it's a ridiculus 30% chance! I was willing to pay over $100 for this game sight unseen based the the hours of enjoyment I recieved from prvious titles in the series but now I will be very hesitant to but anything with a SID Meyer label.

Also the game and scrolling was very slow on the latest high performance hardware. Awful code for such a simple game.

Save yourself some money and fustration and re-install your copy of ALpha C.

Graphics: Much better than previous incarnations but very slow for a non 3d game.

Sound: Average but too repetitive. I heard the same song played over and over during each age. Four songs 22 hours how nice.

Nope, CivIII. It's not that i'm just getting used to it either, i've been playing it for the last few nights now, so i'm as "warmed up" to the changes from the previous versions as i ever will be.

'nuff said.

I like CivIII, although some of the complaints are pretty valid. I play it with the sound turned off... I also liked SMAC (and wanted to get the "Alien Crossfire" expansion pack, but it hasn't been available for a while), which is pretty interesting in spite of the lo-res graphics (the movies are cool). CivII CTP is pretty cool also, but CivIII is an improvement on it, I believe.

CivIII seems to still have a bug where if you build a lot of ICBMs and take out most of the enemys' cities, it'll start forgetting which characters belong to which players. Otherwise, it's quite addicting, particularly in the early game. It gets tedious in the modern ages unless you're fighting a war or two.

I like it. It gets frustrating at times, but I'd put it on par with Civilization II. They both are incredibly enjoyable games and both are installed right now 🙂

I don't know if they patched it but when I played it (soon after it came out) there were glaring problems with corruption and completely ridiculous battles. It was almost as though the game didn't even look at unit stats when you attacked. I much preferred Civ 2's firepower bonus and non-discrete hitpoints system. I had tanks losing battles to spearmen.

Funny....IGN does not hand out 9.4 ratings easily.

Until their mean is 5 (1-10 scale implies 5 is average), which it's not, it's around 7.5 they are flawed. Try reading some reviews of people who have nothing to gain (read: advertising dollars and happy customers/readers) such as consumer driven sites such as pcgamereview.com . We, the consumers, Gave it a 3.22/5 last time I checked which is pretty average. And dismal if you consider the previous ones in the series all scored above 4.5. Not saying it's a horrible game overall but when compared to previous works in the series it's horrible. Which accounts for the harsh language and critique in some comments.

Sorry guys:

Im afraid Im going to have to disagree with all of you. Ive been playing Civilization since 1991 on my 286 dos machine. I own every version. Every version!!

And guess what - I love this version! Everything new takes getting used to. I love the complexity of this version.

I hope they keep up the good work.

BTW - "You ignore our generous offer?! Your insolence can no longer be tolerated. Prepare for WAR!".

This is blasphemous!

Sid Meyer's games ROCK! I have not found one I have not liked. And even if it was a bad game, you're going to state this after games like Civ, Pirates, Gettysburgh, SimGolf. C'mon, one bad game should not tarnish one of the most respected programmer/designers of our time.

Alpha Centauri sucks ass too... he gave me that one too. What's with people loving these completely pointless and hardly entertaining games!?

I hope you kidding. First I said "Hesitant" meaning I will read every single review possible, ask friends, download a "demo" before shelling out the cash. Before, as you indicated, it was an automatic buy without a second thouht. You knew it would be awesome stuff. But after this yes I'm hessitant. And yes I can't spell either becuase I've been playing games for 10 years.

BTW-it's actually brian reynolds who's "most respected programmer/designers of our time." to most professional reviewers I've seen. Theres an old joke about if Reynolds drivers license says "Sid Meyer's-Brian Reynolds". The reason for that is Brian designed the best ones civ2 and smac ,while of course, Sid took the credit while doing RR TYCOON. And obiously Sid did'nt touch this game either since he was working on sim golf.

- I like your game choices but would add X-com to that list
