There goes my week. I just got my wisdom teeth pulled and my god the pain is incredible. I'd imagine that normally it's pretty bad, but when they pulled out my lower right wisdom tooth, apparently they took out some bone with it. :Q

I specifically remember looking at the reflection on my dentist's glasses and thinking, is it really necessary to make a hole that big to dig out one tooth. Afterward, the doctor told me he needed to cut a nice extra large hole to get that tooth out, and some bone in my jaw was a casualty.

Interesting how as the anesthetic wears off, I feel increasing amounts of new pain that wasn't there before. Man sucks to know that I have two more to go.

I got all 4 of mine done at once. They were impacted. My face swelled up and I looked like some form of human chipmunk. :Q

Um... you should have been given some drugs equal to that of "you can't drive while you're on these drugs" if not totally "you probably won't be able to open more than one eye at a time while you're on these drugs".

Nik {watched Viper GTS go through the same thing}

OMG.. they didn't put you under!? I was freaked out when even my very good and trusted dentist offered to do the procedure without putting me under (painkillers and nova though).. so I wisely took myself to an oral surgeon who came highly recommended.. only thing bad about the operation was that I had a high gagging reaction which I didn't know about and I had bloody eyes and looked like I got beat up for about a week.. but no real pain..

Edit: Forgot to mention I had 2 heavily impacted teeth on the bottom and two (easier) impacted towards the top.. no pain, no swelling, no complications, lots of lovely drug prescriptions that made me feel like I was floating anyway.. some people just have bad luck when it comes to this operation tho..

BTW do not neglect putting ice on you cheeks or it WILL swell up nicely..

My friend had all four wisdom teeth coming out at an angle that didn't make it out to surface. It showed on x-ray. He had all four removed while placed under drip administered anesthesia. Anesthesia put him to unconscious and consciousness was brought back with a shot. He went home with a week supply of VICODIN.

Yeah he gave me a prescription for some painkillers, but I have to first feel competent enough to drive out to the drug store. The pain is affecting my ability to concentrate on anything.

Man, I either had a good dentist or I'm just good at pain management, but I had three impacted wisdom teeth taken out while I was fully conscious. I was at work the same night that I had them pulled.

I got one left, and I'm crossing my fingers that this one is gonna be nice.

Can you find some Tylenol or any acetaminophen pain killer? I'm sure you can... Take 1,000mg(two extra strength). It should make you feel somewhat better. Advil or aspirin is no-no because they will increase bleeding. While Tylenol has your pain reduced, go to your pharmacy and pick up your prescription. You'll most likely get a acetaminophen pills with some narcotic pain killer such as hydrocodone or codeine added to it.

Wow...I take it you know your stuff;)

I feel your pain (sorta...)
yeah, I have had braces, and I'm on my fourth year...it sucks. Palatal expander, rubber bands, almost everything (not headgear, phew!) But, I've had some big pains, right now, my LAST MONTH of braces, I have rubber bands, going from bottom to top to bottom to top to bottom, on both sides. They hurt so much, and I measured how much I could open my mouth while they're on, and it came to 1mm, rounding up :(
I'm sorry about your teeth, I will probably have tio go through the same thing someday...

They had to put me under and it was performed in a hospital. I remember asking the anesthesiologist how long it would take and the next thing I remember was awakening and hearing the doctor say, "I have never seen such dense bone!". Two of them had to be chiseled out, and I also managed to swallow an immense amount of blood and had a *very* disgusting accident soon after I came to. It was also just before finals my senior year (because I would no longer be on my Mom's dental insurance after graduation), so I could not take the painkillers (as they mess up your short-term memory) :( :Q It will get better soon, though :) And then you can tell stories about it to your grandkids...

When I had mine taken out they gave me the prescription ahead of time and made sure I had the painkillers with me before they even did the operation. I took one, then thought "I'm tough" and didnt take any more till a stab of pain like a hot poker hit me. After that I took them every 4 hours like the bottle said!

I remember when I had mine taken out...

The denstist made a whole in his schedule from 1 till 3 to take'em out. I got out of the chair at 6 !!!

FIVE HOURS TO GET EM OUT !!!
The first hour was just to stuff enough anestisics in me to freeze me up... the second hour was to get my two top ones out and get me even more anestetics for my bottom ones. The next 1½hours were to get my bottom left one out... the last 1½ hours were for my bottom right... Then, they gave me stuff almost as strong as morphein for the pain... it sucked...

When my dad had his out, they bled an awful lot.. for the first 3 days or so, on and off. Then one of them started bleeding again a couple days later, then it quit, then that happened again. So finally about 2 1/2 weeks after he had them done, that one started bleeding pretty heavily again and it wouldn't stop.. they had to take him to the emergency room and do something that was apparently pretty d@mn painful (I wasn't there, and I don't remember exactly what he said they did) to get it to stop... then about 2 hours after he got home, it started bleeding AGAIN, but not so bad this time.

I don't think he's had much trouble with it since, but geez.. it scares me for when I have to get mine pulled.

<< Why do you need them removed anyhow? >>

Many people have what are called "impacted" wisdom teeth. This is where your jaw is smaller than what it should be and instead of your wisdom teeth coming straigh up and taking up their own space, they come in at an angle and start smashing into the teeth in front of them. It is a very painful situation, and cause havoc on the allignment and straightness of your teeth.

Also, the bottom wisdom teeth are far more troublesome than your top wisdom teeth. It's due to the layout of your jawbone. On the bottom, the back part of your jaw makes nearly a 90 degree angle and does not leave much room for the teeth to grow in. In the top, they are planted into your skull in a fairly open and straight position.

The angle of your jaw makes it not only hard for your wisdom teeth to find room to grow, but it also makes for a very difficult time for a dentist/oral surgeon to cut them out.
