BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A Pennsylvania construction worker accidentally cut off his hand with a power saw and then shot himself in the head with a nail gun several times, apparently hoping to end his pain, police said.

William Bartron, 25, had at least a dozen 1-inch nails protruding from his scalp, police said. He underwent surgery to reattach the hand and was hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday, said his employer Greg Soltis.

Bartron severed his hand Tuesday while using a miter saw in the basement of another man's home, police said.

After finding Bartron, the man called emergency. Soltis arrived a short time later.

Soltis said Bartron had shot several nails into his head with a pneumatic gun "because he could not stand the pain from the amputation," according to police.

I agree. Having nails shot into your head is much less painful than having your hand cut off.

I tried sarcasm once. It wasn't funny.

I'm not sure what is morepainful - the fact that he will have limited use of his arm for the rest of his life, or the fact that everyone will remember him as "the guy who cut off his own hand and then tried to put himself out of misery by shooting himself in the head with a nail gun 12 times...AND LIVED".

Do you think that after the first few nails, he would have realized that he wasn't killing himself and should STOP?? I don't know, but twelve nails just sounds a little excessive. Well, actually, ONE nail sounds a little excessive, but then again, I don't commonly sever my hand with a powered mitre saw either.

Haven't you ever been tempted to? My dad has a nice Makita that I used to use all the time. I was always slightly tempted to cut off body parts with it. :D

Probably the same part of me that is slightly tempted to swerve into the path of semis, drive off cliffs, into walls, etc.

OK. I don't think Bartron was playing with a full deck prior to the miter saw incident.....:(

The guy should've aimed for his temple, or maybe his eye socket...

I guess it goes to show that a hand on the floor is worth 12 nails in the skull! :)
