I posted an auction for the Microsoft Wireless Optical desktop today. Within an hour, I received this email from a ebay lurker.

Subj: Question for seller -- Item #2750818640

Hi,
I was wondering if I could check if you have the actual product. If you could paste the product id from under the keyboard or mouse, I could look it up in the microsoft.com database and see that it is actually a real optical set. The product id looks like:
51389-456-11846730-00000 (which was on my optical intellimouse).

I'll buy as soon as I check it's real, I really need a set for my powerbook. If possible if I buy, do you think you could ship by monday? I am leaving for college next week.

I responded with:

nice try. if you want a unique product ID, go to Office Depot or Staples. They have demo units all over the store. Copy it down from there and fax the info to microsoft for your scam you're trying to pull.

A couple hours later, I received this from the scammer:

haha sorry... i honestly did buy some ms stuff but i liked how these look
and i don't really want to pay for it just for the cool looks. but thanks
for not getting pissed at my half baked attempt.

I was ROFLMAO when I read his reply. eBay is a primary target for scamming.

i'm clueless. someone clue me in on what sort of scam he was trying to pull.

I think he was trying to get some MS products for free through warranty by sending in the product ID number.

So MS sends out replacements if you have just the ID?

There was a thread on this a while back I think. Microsoft had a batch of malfunctioning intellimouses, and if you sent them a scan of the bottom of your mouse, and you matched their batch, they would send you a new one.

It doesn't have to be just that batch. It can be any malfunctioning (non OEM) microsoft mouse since they have a lifetime warrenty. But, like t60 said, you need the scan. I don't think the scammer could do it with just the serial number.

Nah, many people were able to just read off the numbers on the mouse in the case of the intellimouse explorer.

Well, they have the best warranty replacement I've seen from a company but that is just asking for scammers if they don't even require a scan.

yeh i wish people would not scam this.

ive got this and its a great mouse. i got it about a year ago so its still got a lot of life left in it but if it does die i hope this warranty program is still here so i can get it replaced. damn scammers

I had one of those damned mice. It broke, and I called MS and got the warranty replacement. Then that one broke and I called and got another replacement. Then that one broke and I got the replacement. Then that one broke and I was like, F this and I got a logitech and smashed the MS one.

-Similar here... Didn't go through quite as many M$ ones though.
