Extra sodium is only really bad for you if you have existing high blood pressure or other problems, or so I hear.

Excess sodium can cause retention of water. Excess water helps to elevate blood pressure. That's why, when prescribing blood pressure medication, doctors will usually include a "water pill" (diuretic). They help to force the excess water out of your body. Doctors will also tell you to cut back on your salt intake.
