I budgeted out $250 for my new build's CPU, so I've been really tempted to get a quad...

but I've decided not to get one and just to get an E6600 instead. Why? I probably won't be doing anything CPU-intensive for the next four years. Plus, that and the quad overclocking/heat issues has me rather nervous.

I'm moving up in July to a Q6600.

I do mostly gaming, but the other time consuming activity is encoding video from our summer wakeskating/wakeboarding, which happens several times a week. We haven't started taping yet this year, but last year once we started taping we were making 5-7 hours of footage per week, and all that had to be edited and then encoded into various formats. Some for DVDs, some for internet.

So I will be exploiting my 4 cores immediately.

i will be going from a e4300 to a q6600 in july also. my rig is already capable, equipped and ready to accept 2 more cores @ 30% more heat. a simple cpu swap for me, yay!

bwhahahaahha,

It will be an even better step up for me. I have an athlon xp 2000. :)

You and me both. I'm looking to upgrade to a Q6600 w/ phase change cooling.

I think Supreme Commander already uses a Quad-Core CPU whenever possible, especially off-line with lots of A.I stuff going on in skirmishes. But unfortunately that game ain't very good (just my two cents, it lacks variety and is blend, doesn't have much atmosphere).

Same here, only I have a 3200+ lol. It may be a while before most games take advantage of 4 cores, but photoshop is going to love the q6600. :D

I'll always have fond memories of my athlon64, great chip in it's day. Socket 939 ftw!!11oneone. Still pissed AMD dropped it and went with the lackluster AM2 line.

I can't wait. I've got a creative zen vision:w that I want to put some of my dvds on, but it takes forever to rip and then reencode a movie for playback on the device. I've stopped doing that until the end of July, when my processing prowess will take a leap forward. Photo work in Lightroom should be noticeably more snappy, too. :)

Only one more month!

GUYS!!!

If and i say ONLY IF overclocking is your object. Its imperitive you WAIT until the G0 steppings this september.

Otherwise your going to have to hit a very very difficult lottery to get a 3.6ghz quad.

And trust me, ive gone though 3 quads to only have 1 hit 3.6ghz on my 680i

My X3220 is doing VERY VERY nicely on my Gigabyte P35 @ 460FSB x 8

But on my 680i i hit a wall @ 375FSB.

So i dont recomend you getting the 680i + Q6600 combo.

P35 FTW!!!

aigomorla, with a P35 and good air cooling (thinking Thermalright Ultra 120 or Tuniq Tower), would 3.0-3.2 be likely? I was thinking something like 335fsb * 9 or something with some barely overclocked DDR2 667, or some overclocked 533.

i haven't heard about the september steppings... do you have a list of chips and estimated prices?

my plan was to build in august, but i could probably hold out until september if it's going to be that much better.

aigomorla, this board is MUCH better for quads. A P5K3 DELUXE + Q6600 + this bad boy should equal 4GHz+. However, ANY board with a quad using any air cooler and you're lucky to get to 3.5GHz. At 3.5GHz and the best air cooler, you're still looking at some VERY high load temps.

The biggest hurdle with overclocking quads is obviously the heat, next is the board. If you get a P5K3 and are able to keep your temp low, I think you've got a good chance of hitting 4GHz.

Well, i am going quad core.

Ideal setup?

Q6600 @ 9x334 on stock cooler/stock voltage.
4GB of that 667Mhz HP Promo RAM from the Hot Deals Section (already have)
Some board that supports that
nVidia 8800GTS or and ATi X1950Pro, either one would working, i play games like Rise of Nations
1x160GB OS drive
3x500GB in RAID5 for multimedia.

Real high requirements, right?

Should i buy in August or wait til September?

My next build is planned with a Gigabyte G33M-DS2R mobo (unless a better mobo gets released by the time I build) inside a Qmicra v1 SFF case so I think for now a E4300 will suit me well. I havent heard of anyone sticking a Q6600 on that mobo yet so how well it overclocks on a DS2R is unknown to me. Hence my thinking I'll just wait till September and see what happens. A E4300 at 3GHz should do me fine the rest of the year as far as my gaming needs go. I'm not even sure I can wait for July 22nd before buying my E4300. This build has been delayed a few times already by money constraints life has thrown at me this year. But now I got the money set aside. Just waiting until I get back from my vacation before odering. I'm getting seriously impatient. LOL

Anyway, thats my situation and why I think I'll wait till September and see what happens. I think the prices will drop some wether Intel purposely lowers it or not. Supply should be plentiful I'm thinking and that should drop it a little at least below the July 22nd $266 price tag. Besides, some better Quads might be more attractive to me by then. Who knows. :)

Cant wait... I just need the Q6600 to hit 3.0 - 3.2 ghz on air & I'll be happy... I currently have a P4 2.8C @ 3.4 ghz, it's time for an upgrade.

P35 based boards should all do great (compared to an i680 board), but specifically the P5K3 DELUXE. Awesome board for quads.

The P35 DS3R looks like the cheapest good motherboard for these chips, I guess it'll replace the DS3 from this generation.

Gonna try to get one for DC. Will probably build a 2nd one in January. And aigomorla, I don't get your logic. Eventually if you wait chips will be better.... Why not wait for an octa-core?

if you wait, you'll never build one ;)

Is running a Q6600 under phase-change a good idea? G0 stepping Q6600s might be doable, but I've heard that heavily OCed/overvolted current-gen Q6600s, Q6700s, and QX6700s put out too much heat for most commercial phase-change units to handle.

My QX6700 at 3.73GHz on Vapochill LS phase cooling is not giving me or my vapoLS any problems. (going on 8 months now)

I'm sure I could concoct an abusive overclocking situation with my quad and my mobo that would then destroy my phase cooler, but it does not seem to be an inevitable fate or some such.

He was talking about overclocking a quad. If you don't understand the purpose of waiting then good luck if you try to overclock.

It is kind of funny to see how many people are wasting their money on a quad when they would be better suited with a dual core.
