<< Evidence at trial showed that the woman was arrested for public intoxication and had been moved to a padded cell where her clothing had been removed. Later, following a shift change at the jail, the decision was made to remove the woman from her cell and place her naked face-down on a wooden board with her legs and arms strapped down spread-eagled.

The defendants testified that she was left in that position for more than three hours. Throughout the woman's ordeal, video monitors transmitted nude images of her to monitors mounted in the front office of the jail. Eventually, her buttocks were covered by a towel. Most of the deputies on duty were male.

And this is one of those occasions when it's a good thing there's an ACLU. They should have not only fined the cops involved, but do as the bible says "an eye for an eye", they should have tied them down on the same boards in the city square for a few hours for all to see....

All I can say is the lawyers must not have been very good if she was only awarded $5,000 in damages. That's the type of thing I would think would be a HUGE lawsuit.

I love this quote:

<< In a 1998 interview with the Des Moines Register, the inventor of the restraining board, Linn County Sheriff Don Zeller, publicly defended Story County's use of the device, saying that "the odor of the wood seems to have a natural calming effect." >>

Ok, as long as the board smelled nice.

darn i was hoping that link was a picture :)

muahaha.

In my opinion, one of the big points of going to jail, is because you broke the law, and hopefully the humiliation of being locked up? will teach you not to break the law again.

"nice calming effect" ... thanks. Let me take that board and smack him upside the head a few times with it - that will have a nice calming effect too :|

Umm... yeah, but there's a little difference between being "locked up" and being tied naked to a board and having your image broadcast all over the police station. :frown:

The more I think about it I think every employe in that police station should be charged and fired. This is inhuman.

her butt was covered by a towel? So what was broadcast?

legs, back, back of head?

she was face down, could have been a dude, and it would have looked the same.

i agree it may have been extreme, but how many times do you see decent women gettin arrested for public drunk? she prolly was a crack-h0 or something. Great we give $5k of government money to feed her needs.

In your case, you probably see very few women...drunk or otherwise.

<< she prolly was a crack-h0 or something. >>

You're probably impotent.

If a guy was drunk and was arrested and he was stripped naked and strapped down in front of female police officers I think most guys would see it differently.

I wonder where the other half of the story is? This probably happened, but I wouldn't trust the ACLU to provide all the facts, anymore then a liberal is going to trust Drudge.

Tell me Russ, under what circumstances is it acceptable for police to tie a naked woman down to a wooden board?

<< her butt was covered by a towel? So what was broadcast? >>

Not only are you an idiot who has no idea what a human rights violation is, but you also don't read very well.

From the article:

<< Eventually, her buttocks were covered by a towel. >>

Eventually

People are dense. :|

And just for reference, if it was a man, it would be just as wrong.
