OMG! Please say it isn't so... Is my XBox dying?

Ok Ive had my XBox since November of last year. No problems with the system at all.

Yesterday I went and rented 007 Agent Under Fire from Blockbuster. I brought it home and played it for a short time. (beat first two missions, but forgot to save it)

Anyway today my cousin was playing SSX Tricky and the XBox was running fine. We went and put 007 Agent Under Fire in tonight to play some of that.

After the first mission/starting the second mission the game paused and went to the XBox loading screen (where it has music, memory, etc...). It did this twice at the same place. I took the game out and looked at it. There was a minor scratch in the game, not very big, and tons of finger prints. I cleaned the finger prints off and the game then worked great. I was in the computer room looking something up and my cousin told me it did it again between the 4th and 5th missions. I did not see this but I trust him. We continued playing for a little while and nothing else happened.

I did notice that a couple times playing the game that the XBox was making a low, humming noise (coming from the DVDROM I guess, it was real quiet).

I haven't tryed any of the other games I have, but I was just wondering if my XBox is going to die? I dont have a extended warrenty at all, and I have no ideal what Microsofts policy is to replace an XBox if it does die. 🙁

Guess I'll try some more games tommorow and see if it does this again. It might just be the game, but Im not sure... 🙁

hmmm well if it is dying how good is there return policy if they even have one?

I know when my mouse died they sent me a new one. (easy rma)

I would really hate to have a $300 paper weight sitting on my TV :| 🙁

Arent those DVD's sensitive to scratches? I would try a game with no scratches and see if it hapens again. If it is dying, your SOL. Last I've heard theres a 200 dollar charge for a RMA (could be lower now that the prices have gone down).

200 for an RMA? might as well just buy a new one :|

good to hear that it might just be that the DVD is "bad"

I would really hate for this thing to die. Its a very lightly used XBox, I hardly ever game on it much.

the game is great. I do plan on adding it to my list of games I need to buy. That is if my XBox doesn't die.

cool. 🙂
well i hope your xbox survives.. and i think it will. maybe there was just a little dust in there or the game disc wasnt seated in the tray right and was vibrating a little.

about a month ago, mine paused and restarted once or twice in the middle of a game for no reason also. Only happend those few times though, no explanation as to why.. never happened again. Thankfully my xbox didnt die. I'm sure yours will make it through this also..

Im hoping its just the disc I rented. I only played it like 20 mins last night, and played it for awhile tonight when the problems actually happened.

One thing that makes me think its the disc is that my cousin was gaming on the thing for a couple hours before we put 007 in and he had no problems.

This is only the 2nd game I have ever rented for my XBox though. It might be that the XBox can't take the finger printed Blockbuster games 😉

also I dont know how dust could get in the DVD Tray, but if it did how do you clean it?

Don't take that as a fact. I've heard 200 before the price drop, so I dont know what the real cost is. I got that info from a thread I read posted by an Xbox user who was complaining about MS wanting 200 bucks for the RMA.

I've heard of so many XBOX's dying and MS doing little or nothing about it.

So if I were to buy an XBOX I would pay with a premium credit card (VISA/MasterCard/Amex) to get the free exended warranty and depending on the price get the store's replacement plan.

yeah well I dont have a credit card so guess Im out of luck on that one.

I also didn't have the extra 50 bucks to send off the extended warrenty card that came inside the XBox box.

Oh well Im going to try some Halo, etc.. and see if the system works with that.

My xbox died last week too and Im SOL for now. I dont have an extended warranty and mine is over the 30 days too. It was purchased on a visa card so the warranty was doubled through them. The only problem is that they need an official repair estimate which I can only get through microsoft. Then they said when they see that they will judge whether or not it is covered. The whole process has been a real pain.

just played for about 30 more mins with no problems.

wierd question I know, but I usually pay no attention to this stuff cause the TV volume is up.

only things I heard were some sounds like it was reading something from the Hard drive or DVD during the game, and when I took one game out the DVD drive made a louder spin up noise when there was no game in the system. I think all of these are normal sounds though.

I just think its wierd that the two times it did this when I saw it, it was always at the same place. Thats why Im thinking its the game, or at least I hope it is.

I was planning on getting a Gamecube later this summer/early fall. Id hate to buy a new XBox first.

I wouldn't worry...if it's a game from Blockbuster, it's certainly been put through the equivalent of an in-sink-erator !

Think about how many little sh!ts have run their frickin' little sticky sour straw laden fingers all over this thing and put many microscopic

scaratches all over this poor thing...

Personally, I would never rent anything from Blockbuster, not even VHS... Try a NEW game.

game consoles these days seem to have serious QC issues. 🙁 my sega genesis & nintendo still work flawlessly to this day 🙂

my ps2 won't play dvd games or movies anymore. 🙁

only cdr works now. isn't that bad since I only have 1 dvd game and 3 dvdrs. the rest are cdr. 🙂

i might open it up and clean the lens which might do the trick, who knows.

if your getting disc read errors then thats a common problem with ps2. The only way to fix it is to send it back to Sony for 120. Dont try no self fixing either because my brother did and tried to tighten the screws like someone had said and ended up messing up the system and having to buy a new one
