If I may, I think that everyone here thought what I did: Your mom was it a big accident, is in ICU or the hospital. From the pics you've posted, this is a fender bender.

I don't know much about the accident, but I have to read accident reports everyday, and injuries only seem to happen in fairly substancial crashes. I'm not saying that your mom isn't injured, but I have a feeling that everyone might be thinking that you're overstating things a bit.

Anyway, that's just the way that it looks, I'm prepared to be flamed and considered insensitive now.

Be glad that your mom is ok. My mom and I were hit in the drivers side by a loaded log truck doing 80. As you can imagine she was severely mangled.

Although it is a natural tendency to freak out when a loved one is involved in an accident, the "aftermath" is damage that would be indicative of parking lot speeds.

Hence people's reactions. The first thread was understandable, the second one should have been more along the lines of "Well, it wasn't nearly as bad as I first thought," or something like that.

She went to her chiropractor today and the chiropractor said some of the muscles in her neck are strained and but not torn. She just told me it hurts like a b!tch to move her neck. But the doctor said it is gonna take awhile to heal. Sorry for not being so clear.

To be realistic, this might be a bitch for a long time. I got rear-ended by a Land Rover last May and to this day, I'm going through whiplash. The degree of injury is not related to vehicle damage. I've gone to so many doctors, ran out of $10K PIP protection, yet I don't feel all that better.

Get an attorney immediately. You don't want to be screwed by other guy's insurance company.

My car got hit hard. I was nearly dead stop and this middle age bonehead rearended me in his Land Rover going about 30mph. His car was barely damaged. My car was totalled with rear-end crushed in about a foot. I'll post a pic when I find it. It's in prints and I'll have to take a pic of prints.

Look folks, let the cop weigh in on matters and evidence here, okay. No, the pictures do not show a lot of damage, however, I have seen full on 45mph+ collisions where one vehicle is completely totalled out and the other one has minor damage like his mom's van. My mother was in an accident recently where a guy came down a side-street, blew a stop sign and broad sided my mother in her car going about 40mph or so. His front end lost about 3 feet in length and did the accordian "crumple zone" thing. My mothers car got a flat tire and a large dent in the fender. She was in pretty rough pain for about three weeks afterward and still has some residual pain occasionally and let me tell you, she can handle her pain well, trust me. We're talking about a woman that had major surgery and was up and about visiting for christmas within 2 days of being out of the hospital.

Anyway, we also have to assume that Chrysler designs their vans to be able to sustain a pretty violent collision from the rear with some sort of energy transfer through the chassis of the vehicle. I'm guessing that his mom, being the soft, chewy insides of a machine made of steel absorbed a fair amount of energy from the collision. I've seen small "rear end" collisions where the driver and passenger's heads have hit the windshield and they were wearing seatbelts, so there are definitely forces involved in even a "slow" traffic accident that you can't understand sometimes.

New hatch...probably around $1,000, assuming they can still reuse the glass.
New bumper and bumper cover...$500-$1000.
Paint and labor costs...$1500-$2000.

You're looking at $3500-$4000 in repairs.

I was in an accident years ago and I had the same pain your mom has. Just strained muscles. It hurts pretty bad, but if you keep stretching them it will get better. Remind her to keep stretching even after the pain is gone because it will come back in the form of headaches and such. Sorry for your loss.

You said there was another car in between the "woman from your school" and your mom's car? That one MUST be totaled! And I can see where your mom may have been thrown violently backward. If her car just jumped forward instantly at even 20MPH, that would be a lot of G-force. The damage wouldn't appear to be much, if the vehicle launched forward instead of absorbing the impact. I'm surprised, because those particular minivans are a couple tons!

Our van was rear-ended at a light, maybe two months ago. My mother and 9yo (at the time..he's 10 now) brother were in the van. Some kid with a learners' permit & nobody else in the car (his mother's car) slammed into the back of our '89 Plymouth Grand Voyager, blowing both back windows out, and buckling the rear trunk area (floor)..it also slammed the rear door/hatch in, and bowed the rear fenders out. I wish I had pics...it was pretty crunched.

Edit: Our van was totalled, btw..forgot to mention that..

ehhh take 800mg of motrin, go to sleep, problems are gone in the morning.

Anybody who complains about an accident witht hat little damage is over reacting. I have been in an accident where the rear of the car crushed up into within 8 inches of my head, and I got out , popped some motrin and was fine.

Well, I too see an insignificant accident there. I guess exaggeration is sometimes our nature. However, I'm glad it wasn't anything significant and all is well with your mum. I hope that she stays healthy.
