I was setting up my network, trying to get internet sharing on two computers with only one network card in each and a switch. As advised, I hooked up the LAN to the switch and the switch to the two computers. Upon setting up the network in WinXP I was asked to restart. So I clicked 'OK' and the computer begins to shut down. It suddenly freezes so I simply press the reset button on the computer case. The monitor blanked out and remained that way as I pressed reset several times. I pressed the power button only to find that it's not working so I pulled the plug from the back. Upon plugging it back in and pressing the power button, nothing happened. No lights, no sounds, no NOTHING! What the heck could've gone wrong? Perhaps my power supply died? I purchased it not even 3 months ago... ARGH, I sure hope my hardware isn't fried!

Upon opening the case the green LED on the motherboard was on (as it always is), so I don't think it's the PSU anymore. Perhaps my motherboard was fried? Argh, what should I do?

(BTW it's an ASUS CUSL2 motherboard)

Do the fans come on? The green light only means one of your many voltages are working. If the fans don't come on I would go get an inexpensive power supply and give it a try first.

Get your hardware back to where it was before by removing whatever you've added.

clear CMOS and retry.

Good point. Yank the network card back out.

Check your Heastsink/Fan to make sure it wasn't bumped off the processor as well, make sure the RAM is seated, and your KB/Mouse is plugged in to the right ports. Take out the NIC as said, and see what happens.

Reset the CMOS, by looking in your motherboard manual, locating the proper jumpers and replace the jumpers as the manual explains.

Just taking the battery out will not reset it unless you leave it for several hours. Should be a jumper or traces on the board to short out.

That's really odd. I reset the CMOS by taking the battery out and keeping it out for 60+ seconds. After putting it back in the computer started working again to my surprise. As soon as I changed some windows setting and restarted when prompted, the same whole ordeal started all over again (freeze on restart, won't reset or power off, pull plug, won't turn on). I proceeded to mess with the CMOS battery and after a few minutes of playing with it, all of a sudden the computer just turned on by itself as I was taking it out. I got the impression that perhaps the battery was dying or dead and the computer would only work with it out. So anyways I went back to work and was once again prompted to restart (if you're wondering why I've been restarting so much it's b/c this is off a brand new installation of winxp)... so I did, and well you can GUESS what happened after that :|

So basically every time the computer freezes on restarting the only way for me to turn on my computer afterwards is to 'jump-start' the darn thing. I have to take out and put in the battery , take out, put in, take out, put in, etc until the computer randomly turns on w/o me pressing the power button Sometimes the battery will be in when it magically turns on and sometimes it's out. This is TOTALLY messed up. You guys think it's the motherboard doing this? Should I just get it replaced? Perhaps it could even be windows?
