I heard recently that Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) was sexually involved with Gene Roddenberry. That caught me by surprise also.

William Shatner was (and still iss) a jackass. He was an egotistical asshole and everyone resented him for it. Read some books. 😉

If one was openly gay the entire time, then no it's not much of a story. But it's still surprising to find out 40 years after his first big role, with never any indication of it. And when he's specifically announcing it.
