Ok it started two days ago I get these adds and they are popping up on multiple sites these forums being one of them about me winning a Ipod Nano and its very loud, what can I do to make it stop, I have AVG on my system and its up to date.

Anyone know what the heck is the cause of this.

BTW I wear headphones and these adds are way louder them my music and killing my ears.

Would be very thankful for any help.

AVG Free Edition has a considerably lower malware detection rate than AVG AntiMalware (due to the lack of the Ewido Scanning Engine).

A quick test to make sure that this is not being caused by adware / viruses / malware would be to:

1. Download and install SuperAntiSpyware (install and update it, do not start scanning yet)
2. Install the Kaspersky Browser Based malware scanner (let it install the activeX control and update, do not scan just yet).
3. Restart into Safe Mode with Networking (make sure Windows Firewall is on or that you are behind a router or have a firewall solution of your own)
4. Run a deep scan with SuperAntiSpyware
5. Run a scan of local hard drives with the Kaspersky web based malware scanner

6. If Kaspersky finds malware that AVG missed, you can get the AOL AVS for free that uses the Kaspersky engine to remove it, Kaspersky's online scanner does not remove the malware, only detects it, but the AOL AVS will do both or if you prefer, you install the trial version of Kaspersky which has some added features.

7. If these adds do not originate from Adware, install FireFox and an addon for it called addblock Plus, which has a subscription list of continually updated known advertisements that it automatically blocks. Migrate to it as your primary web browser to get these features.

If it turns out to be adware/spyware or some other malware, Renob, could you post the exact names that the anti-spyware and antivirus software call them? I'm curious what family of malware does that... sure sounds annoying! :frown:

Definitely get Firefox with the Adblock extension.

In the meantime:

1) clear out all your cookies that you don't need or recognize (or better yet, all of them) and clear your browsers cache.
2) follow Schadenfroh's advice, and scan your system. You could have some nasty adware installed.
3) let us know what it is (ie. adware or source of the advertisement). It sounds like a bad flash ad to me.

i have Opera plus the built in content blocker. just click and the ad and it's gone. slowly build up the address you block and soon, all your favorite sites have no ads in them!

Except no one's been getting these mysterious ads at AnandTech Forums with any browser (that I've heard of), except for Renob. So my guess is it's an infection.

well that's true. my dad had a recent similar experience. some nasty adware. try folloing the Security Thread.

I know exactly the ad your talking about.
Its an audio type ad that pops up "ipod nano" in a womans voice.

Its doesn't use any adware/spyware etc to pop up.
It only happens to me about once a week.
And only when using IE, firefox doesn't do it.
Its one of those popups that IE doesn't block.
