I got a new Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM and noticed that it said JVC on it. I did some research and found out that Lite-On uses JVC components. This is really bad because JVC makes horrible drives. I had a Creative 2/4/24X CD-RW that lasted only 6 months (many other had the exact same problem) that was made by JVC.

I'm going to have to rethink my opinion of Lite-On drives. It seems I was right to be skeptical of Lite-On drives.

Seems like most everyone around here likes their Lite-On's. I hope you're wrong about the quality...I just ordered a 24X CD-RW from Newegg.

You're losing out by being skeptics :)

I've burned almost 80 CDRs & CDRWs with my Lite-On 16X, and I've not had a single problem with it.

Perhaps JVC drives is suck because they don't put them together right? Lite-On is doing it right though.

"LITE-ON IT signed a co-operation contract with JVC, famous Japanese electrical company on July.9 2001, to be alliance with each other. " You can find the above sentence in LITE ON official website. link

Heh, I had the same exact drive and it died. Got a replacement drive from Creative and it also died. Got a Lite-On 24/10/40 burner and you know what? Im getting the same symptoms that I got with the Creative before it died. If this one dies, I'm just gonna get a Plextor.

I mis-read your post, i thought you meant a CDRW drive and not a DVD drive. I also have the Lite-On 16x DVD drive(bought it about 3 months before the burner) and you'll be glad to know I haven't had any problems with it.

You're judging a company by one single product that they had problems with, even though they have a very good reputation besides that one product? That's kind of foolish if you ask me, since they are only in co-operation with Lite On anyhow, which is by no means the same thing as being the same entity. They probably either just use some of JVCs parts or they have JVC put the drives together, either way it doesn't matter, because JVC has always made pretty good products in my eyes.

no problems burning w/24x liteon here, and so far regardless of the media. And the prices are right.

go and do a search, you'll find a thread full of peps praising the lite-on.

If you want to go plextor, then thats fine.

At least I won't be seeing dumb threads from dumb peps, who can't use their lite-on properly. :Q

I've burned over 100 cd's and used a few CD-RW's many, many times.

This 16/10/40 Lite-on burner, has given me no problems at all!

LOL! I had the same exact reaction when I went to their web site looking for the latest drivers (after I bought the Lite-on 24/10/40 CD-RW).

JVC DOESN"T EVEN SUCK. THEY MAKE EXPENSIVE JUNK.

I hate JVC so bad that I might not have bought the Lite-on CD-RW knowing what I know now.

My experience with JVC has been with:

VCRs
Receivers
Boom Boxes

All have been excellent quality.

jvc vcr... great.. but my dad don't know how to take care of it and feeds it lots of bad tapes.. so it's on its way out (7yrs) soon. jvc boom box.. probably the BEST one i've seen in a long time. very warm sounding tight bass. not boomy and crappy. jvc cd deck, 4yrs now.. taken quite a beating... it kept playing after being thrown out of its cage (wasn't secure, my own fault) a couple times.. that's some nice anti shock :) so i got no problem w/ JVC.

i have over 10 bundles of 50 cds each full of mp3/software/images/whatever all burned from my old liteon 16x and my new liteon 24x. it's been nothing but flawless. that's about 500 cds total. with maybe less then 30 coasters. no complaints here.

it's foolish of you to be skeptic when everyone raves about a product. what more do you need? someone to PAY you to use it? sheesh.

Disagree. I'd say only Sony makes expensive junk. JVC's electronics is at reasonable price, their mini hifi is the best and most fancy, especially if you're buying the imported "Victor" brand from Japan, not "JVC" brand. Their best stuff is "Victor" brand, their second stuff is "JVC" brand selling to outside of Japan.

If you had a friend who was a friend of somebody you hated, would you stop being their friend?

That aside, I think Lite-On is great. Broke the $100 barrier for everything. :) And with no decrease in quality, no less.

Um...

I've burned almost 80 CDRs & CDRWs with my Lite-On 16X, and I've not had a single problem with it.

Man my el-cheapo panasonic (matsushita) 8x has burned like.. 500 CDrs .. it still sucks though. Saying that you've burned 80 cd's is pretty worthless if you're trying to say it's good. Everyone remember the MSI Kt133 board? Everyone here raved about it, but time told the truth. I'm still kind of waiting for the Lite-ons to prove their longevity. I'm sure that they are great drives though and if I was buying a new drive (which I'm not, my el-cheapo does the job) I probably would get Lite-on.
But yeah, a few people on forums rave about a product, so more people get the product, more people rave and soon enough you have a bandwagon. It doesn't mean it's tried tested and true. I'm sure that any (cept creative) ROM drive will last as long as the lite-on's on this board have lasted. Still though, you can't argue with price, and I do beleive they're good, time will tell.

Dell has recently bought over 250k Lite-On CDRW drives. If that doesn't convince anyone that they make quality drives, nothing will.

My HP 2x2x6 burner burned about 2000 cd's (not too bad eh?) but it has since been put to rest :(

I had a 24x liteon burner for about a week (ended up having to put it in someone else's pc :()

so, I just put in another order for one at newegg. Damn mighty fine drives, for a damn mighty fine price.

smp - I remember those MSI kt133 boards...
heck I bought one to use as a file server and it died in less than 7 months.

My Lite-On 12x still works... but I doubt that I use it as much as some of you guys do.

Just my 2 cents...

:D

Okay, you're trying to prove a point about Lite-On's longevity, but you don't have to take that tone with me ;)

How long are you going to wait... and wait... and wait? How much time should it take to prove reliability? 2 years? By that time, we'll all have DVD burners, so I suggest you shut up and buy a Lite-On :D
