I just read about this site in the Wall Street Journal - K-Mart Forever - The site was started by the company where employees and customers can submit ideas. The article was titled "Companies Who Love Too Much: Kmart And Its Happy Site."

The message forum isn't too well organized at this point (kind of like their stores, I guess), but here's a quote from one of the postings:

Remove Jay Leno from Late Night TV
I used to be a fan of Jay Leno. Especially when everyone was making out he was dumb and stupid. I am for an underdog by nature. After initial success and staying power, Jay Leno now has made fun of Trailer Park people and K- Mart shoppers almost nightly. I think this type of elitist attitude is uncalled for in our "supposedly" egalitarian society. I think K-Mart should protest this stupid man's attitude and entertain an embarassing law suit against him for damaging defamation of a place he has never had the pleasure of being a customer. I no longer watch his elitist program. My TV no longer has the channel available that time of night. I personally purchased very high quality products from K-Mart and have known people who have a high regard for the store all of my life. What if some of them lived in Trailer Parks? I lived in one for a few years and proud of it. Many fine people with good taste live there. What a stupid thing to be ashamed of or make fun of. Jay Leno belongs in the back lot with other misguided idiots.
Hmmm ... It looks like I should watch Jay Leno more frequently - it sounds like he's covering some good material.

We were in kmart yesterday - an unusual occurance - and I couldn't help but comment on what a nasty, nasty store it is. In the same way that target is more upclass and nice than walmart, that difference again is between walmart and kmart. Although walmart may be a little rough looking compared to target it's still clean. The kmart we were in was in tatters and I felt mildly depressed walking around in there. People who go to target make fun of those who go to walmart and I bet people who go to walmart make fun of those who go to kmart

bmacd,

I can have up to 7 accounts with my Cox.net service. Each account has 10 MB of space. I could set something up and host the pics for you if you'd like. PM me if you are interested. :)

Yeah, I wanna see your store because I have seen some pics of a clean kmart before. It is true that Targets are nicer but Walmarts are just as nice but Walmart does so much more volume than Target and this is why sometimes shelves look trashy. The customers are the ones who trash the stores, not the employees.

I worked at a Kmart before and it was clean. Everyone in the community shops there, doctors, layers, etc. It's not just trailer trash that shops there. Where do you guys get your shampoo, toothbrushes, etc?

AWWWWWWWWWWWW! MY EYES! :Q :Q :Q: Q

Those people in the in the image header are butt ugly nasty! Maybe individually they look like decent people, but put them all together, and it's like exponential synergy of horror! Every person in there is either partially ethnic or bald! :( I must go wash my eyes out with soap now.

K-Mart(where the K stands for Kwality) sucks ass! The one in my home town doesn't carry squat, is poorly laid out, dirty, and the people that work there look like rejects from Deliverance. I don't know where the hell they found those people but it's like they hired an inbred family to work there. On the rare occasion that I go there and actually find something I want to buy a whole new ordeal starts. They have 15 or so checkout lanes but never and I mean never have more than 1 or two open. I went down there last year 2 weeks before Christmas to get some wrapping paper since I had run out while wrapping presents. Well I find the paper and go up front to checkout. There were at least 30 people waiting in line and they had ONE checkout lane open. Meanwhile the store manager and 3 of the inbreds were standing behind the service counter drinking coffee and eating someone's birthday cake. I stood there for a few minutes and then people started yelling at the manager to open some additional lanes. What did they do? The manager picked up the cake, then she and the employees just standing around walked to the back of the store and never returned. I ended up just leaving and driving across the river, the town I live in(Sand Springs, OK) is built on two sides of the Arkansas River and the South Side is where the Wal-Mart is. Luckily they are now building a Wal-Mart Super Center on the North side and closing the old Wal-Mart. When they do it will finally, thankfully be the death of our sh1tty K-Mart

When i first started at kmart, i thought it was for trashy people only. Then after working there for a week, i realized that normal people shop there too. A lot of people shop there...granted, it is a convenience store so you will have your bargain shoppers, but other than that, it's just like any other store. HOWEVER, i've found that in the kmart stores that i've worked at (or just in this area), the employees have no problem living in"modular homes". Personally, i could NEVER live in one.

I was in a Target in NE Indianapolis and that was the dirtiest, filthiest, worst lighted, horrible store that I'd ever been in. It was dirtier than some local gas station/bait stores on dirt roads in Mississippi.

I'll never go in another Target again.

I used to be a cashier at Kmart for a year when I was in high school and I've had similar experiences to bmacd. All kinds of people shop there not just your typical "white trash redneck."

During the busiest times, usually weekends between 10am and around 4 or 5pm we probably had 8 or 10 of the checkout lanes open. The store was in decent shape too, the employees were nice people.

Some people are just too judgemental. If our kmart had been clean and a nice store (it closed recently with many others), I would have probably shopped there. There are gonna be run down Walmarts, Kmarts, and a handfull of Target stores. Walmart is agressively opening new stores with wider isles and they are much larger so they can handle the volume. Kmart was great back in the day but they have not adapted and just keep remodeling old crappy stores and it looks crapier when they are done than before.

I'm guessing you were in the one in Homewood. That one (one of the few remaining in Birmingham) is VERY nasty. Ironically, the now closed K-mart on 280 at Inverness was one of the nicest stores of the Walmart/Target/Kmart ilk that I've ever been in. It was as nice as any Target, but without Target's yuppy appeal (if you can call it that) and higher prices. I guess it was just a product of the surrounding area which is very upscale. I loved shopping at that one since it was never crowded. I guess that's why it closed :(

I was glad to see our local K-Mart close down. Not that I enjoy seeing people lose jobs, but that place was a dump. Not just because they never had anything, but the store was not very well kept and was always a mess.
