I was playing DOD and noticed the noise level had dropped I thought that my air conditioning had kicked off 10 mins later my DOD game froze up and would not ALT-Ctrl-del. I reset my computer and when it says that my current cpu temp is 96 celsuis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I immeadiately shut down. apparently the noise I heard was coming from my CPU fan shutting off because after I let the CPU cool down for a while I turned my comp back on and the fan did not turn on so I immeadiatly shut it off.

I have had my system since august last year no problems other than soundblaster giving me fits
1.333
8k7a+
256ram
60 deskstar
ATI radeon
sblive
and apparently a crappy heatsink and Fan

I have an extra heatsink and fan I bought from a crappy local computer store
It's a thermalright with a 80mm fan
I was going to put it on soon because that 60mm fan was getting on my nerves (too loud)

Well anyway should I even bother putting the new heasink and fan on the processor or is it kaput......

R.I.P.

Your Processor

August, 2001 - July, 2002

My condolances for you, and for that processors family.

Its sad when we lose one this young.

I turned it on with the same crappy heatsink/fan on the cpu . It ran fine but, got hot very quickly.

does that mean the processors ok I just need to put a new heastsink fan on it or what?

The processor might be ok, since it still had the heatsink to help dissapate heat, although thats not much of a help without a fan (it is some though). Get a new fan for your HS or get a whole new and better HSF and you should be ok. Hey, its cheaper than just getting a new processor :)

I guess I need to clean the old processor.

Should I just take it out and clean the artic sliver off of it with 91% alcohol and then put it back in with the new HSF on it.

The new HSF has a thermal pad and since I don't have any artic sliver lying around, would it be okay to just use that???

The reason their was a heat issue was because the fan broke.
No place near my town carries Artic Sliver unless it is carried by Best buy.

I took off the HS it did have a odor to it but, this is the first time I have every taking one off so I don't know it it smelled okay or not.

Also the processor did have some white looking gunk on the mirrored loking part, I guess that is what I need to clean off (probably artic sliver right?

Well whatever was on the processor was white looking but, when I got it off it looked sliver.

I guess, I am just going to try it with the thermal pad for now wish me luck hopefully the processor is not damaged

Woohoo, long live T-birds :)

You're a lucky man, my friend, a lucky man indeed. 96 Celsius is really high for a processor that survived. Maybe you should look in to a mobo that has an auto-shutoff feature in the BIOS.

funnily auto-shutoff was set at 75 degrees C but apparently it didn't work, I have a 8k7a+ MOBO.

I think the system hung while playing DOD and somehow kept it from shutting down....

Thats odd. The BIOS should be independant of DoD freezing windows up, shouldn't it? You sure its a BIOS feature and not MBM?

This has taken a strange turn now, I put the new heatsink on fine, plugged in the cpu fan and turned on the machine "the CPU fan did not turn on" Now either I have two bad fans on my hands (One of them brand new) or the problem lies else where, I went into the bios real quick and of course it is showing the CPU fan as not running, I checked the CPU fan connection to the mobo and booted up again and still the cpu fan would not work WTF is going on.

I had noticed previously that it seemed like the cpu fan was shifting speeds on me or something in the last week or so.

So whats up is my MOBO bad or what, any opinions would help because as of this point I am officially lost!!!

Get a 3 to 4 pin fan adapter and plug it into a powersupply lead.

Get some cheapo thermal grease at Radio Shack.

Anyway, once I almost had that problem, LUCKILY nothing happened.

I was messing around on the insides, and for some reason, I pulled the fan plug. I believe I was moving the 3 pin adapter to another part, so I could use that one for something else. Anyway, I forgot to plug the fan back in, I let it run Prime95 overnight, woke up, it froze. I still didn't realize my fan was off. I turned off my computer, turned it back on. Froze within 5 minutes, I checked my heatsink, VERY VERY VERY HOT. So after I burned my self, I realized the fan wasn't plugged in, plugged it in, turned it on, hasn't crashed, and kept feeling the heatsink to see how hot it is, it eventually cooled down, and everything was okay, and I was glad I didn't fry my CPU...

And my heatsink is a piece of junk too, a Volcano 5...

I would say that I'm very lucky :D

I don't think your CPU is fried, if it boots, its fine.

Get a 3 to 4 pin fan adapter and plug it into a powersupply lead.

Ditto, I've seen too many 4-pin fan headers mysteriously stop working to trust running a AMD CPU fan on.

The CPU fan cable is not long enough to reach the only other 3 pin fan adapter I have a antec 1040 case if you were wondering.

Looks like I'll have to try everything out with a 3 to 4 pin adapter (I'l have to go freaking buy one) as john suggested.

Man I'm running all over the place this morning!!!
first 91% alchohol to clean the cpu now this:confused:

hopefully I can find a 3 to 4 pin adapter in this podunk town

In all honesty 91% alcohol is overkill to clean the cpu. Use your fingernail to scrape off the excess, saliva to wipe off the majority of the crud, and then use typical ~50% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol to clean it up. I have seen people use dish soap as well.

I would connect the fan directly to the psu as well, especially if it's one that draws alot of juice. The headers on some mobos do not give out much and may fry if the fan requires more than provided. You may not monitor the "speed" of your fan, but at least you will have a cpu that is still working.

It's alive alivee........

It took me forever to find a darn three to four wire adapter in this town.

One jerk at a local computer store told me that they had them but, would not sell me one because the only keep them for their own computer building purposes, JERK!!! I'l never set foot in there again.

Everything is running fine and cool here and a comfortable 37 degrees celsius, which is cooler than it has ever ran

Thanks for all the help PEEPS:)

Oh yeah when I was in my bios I saw that my FSB was set to 133 shouldn't that be set to 266 correct me if I'm wrong.....
