i used too much AS5 and now there's AS5 on the side of the cpu touching the PCB/green thing. I haven't turned the machine on, and i'm cleaning it with Q-Tips right now. What else should i do?!

Clean it all. What I usually dois apply 4-5 very small dots on the 4 corners and center of hte processor, then spread it out a little bit. AFter that, I put the HS/fan on. Too little AS5 will not cover the whole processor, while too much is a bad thing because you want as much metal to metal as possible.

Well, you could try to clean off the top layer with some metal like a needle, then reapply the HS/FAN , but I wouldn't clean it with cotton/qtips unless I were getting rid of all the AS5.

a little alchohol would be fine (will help keep the qtip from linting), to make sure the pcb is clean.

or

just clean it all off and start over (what I would do, not like you'll be doing that often once you do finish)

would the lint from the q-tip really make a difference?

Dude, why are you freaking? You think the AS5 company would design a product that didn't account for possible user accidents? Just wipe it off and reapply. Nothing to it.

Also, because Q-Tips are cotton, make sure you get all the lint off.

By the way, HAPC, why do you spread the AS5? Their instructions specifically say to put a dab in the middle and let the heatsink spread it through weight distribution.

Unless you get the lint jammed down into the socket or something, it isn't going to do anything other than look like crap.

Use alchohol, start with the qtips (they drop much less lint when soaked in something), and then wrap the eraser end of a pencil in a bit of cloth to finish up.

Arctic recommends a single rice-sized dot in the middle of where the heat sink contacts the cpu, and I have gotten best results from following their advice.

Why do I spread it a little? Why do I put 5 corners? Because it needs to leave a footprint. I've had countless reappliances where ther AS5 did not leave a full square footprint. That is BAD. Why? because there are tiny spaces that are filled with air between the CPU and HS/Fan and those spaces can lead to less conductivity. You want to see a full Square on the HS/Fan after you take it off, or else the AS5 is not doing its job, which is to eliminate air from the equation.

DONT GET ANY AS5 ONTO THE MOTHERBOARD (hopefully you can pull the cpu off w/o doing that)

Otherwise, just wash it under running water with Palmolive and a cloth. Works wonders :) (not kidding)

OT: i read title as "omg, i put too much ass, help!" :Q

i "think" i got some lint on it...and note that i took off the heatsink too, do i need to clean off all of the as5 with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and then using a lint-free cloth to clean it???

Just use the recommended procedure provided by ARCTIC SILVER....they are the experts!

I've used both the drop in the center and the spread method numerous times and it doessn't make bit of difference. In theory it makes sense to have 100% contact between the IHS and the HSF with TIM, but in practice, I have never observed a perceivable difference. Therefore, I use the easiest method, a drop directly in the center of the IHS and a tiny drop on the HSF, works perfectly every time...

ok, so i should clean the as5 now since i took off the heatsink and there might be lint on it.... right?

since i spilt the as5 on the sides of the cpu (on the Integrated Heat Sink), would i need to use like isopropyl alcohol on the sides of the IHS?

Just use a Q-tip and get as much off the sides of the IHS as possible. You will be ok as long as nothing dripped onto the mb. If it did, take your time and keep doing Q-tip work... you just don't want it on the cpu pins or in the socket holes

well, as long as you don't get any AS on the motherboard you're fine, it is a bit easier when it's not on the motherboard...
