OMG I love Western Digital

So I send off my 400gig dead WD hard drive for rma.

What do I receive in the mail yesterday a 750gb hd.

WOOOOT!!!!!!

I love you WD!

Good deal. I love companies that automatically upgrade you when a product is discontinued. I have benefitted from this with an OCZ PSU (500W -> 700W) and a Logitech keyboard / mouse combo.

Yeah, OCZ is awesome too. I had some brand new RAM that wasn't compatiable with a mobo I bought. They not only re-programmed a new batch of RAM for me, but this RAM was a platnium type.

And people tell me capitalism is all about screwing people over. 😉

WD is great in this regard.

Acer on the other hand is hit or miss. Usually they have been able to fix what we have sent in...this last time we sent in a AL2032W and got back a 2216.

Now IMHO the 2216 is a better monitor, but it doesn't have the asthetics the 2032 did which was why we bought this overpriced screens in the first place for our executives.

Still the 2216 has no built in speakers, we should have been sent a 20" from their elite line up or whatever it's called...still not the same level as the 2032, but more in-line with what we had.

The one hard drive that ever crashed on me was a WD...

But they send you a new drive first before you send in your old one 😀.

OCZ too, the memory I bought for my current PC a couple of years back didn't pass memtest, so I sent it back and they sent me the same amount, but a much higher model (better timings).

Some companies are indeed still awesome when it comes to RMA's.

Other companies do that too. I've gotten 74gb raptors back when rmaing 36gb raptors. I've gotten 80gb seagates back when rmaing 40gb seagates.

The main lessen is, never go for their programs to buy up to larger capacity drives when submitting the rma.

😱 That's crazy... I am jealous, wish my hdds would fail more often. :'( (Although... mine is a 1TB and I don't think WD offers any 1.5TB yet..)

Oh I've gotten that before, too. Sent in a 40gb, received a 60gb. Sent in the 60gb, received an 80gb.

You should do that until you have a 1TB HDD. 😀

As others have said this isn't very uncommon and I can assure you other manufacturers do the same depending on what's being returned.

I had a 22" LG-brand LCD die after a little over a year - backlight inverter went out. 3 year warranty though.

I did the advance RMA, and they sent a slightly newer model, along with a prepaid shipping label. 🙂
The newer model has one of those ultra-high-gloss, mirror-finish plastic sheets integrated over the front of the screen though. Now whenever there's anything dark on the screen, I get a lovely panoramic view of the room behind me, as well as me sitting in front of the computer. I've owned CRTs that aren't as reflective.

Oh well. It gets the job done.

Back during the IBM Deskstar(Deathstar) debacle, I sent in a 20gb drive and got back a top of the line 80gb Hitachi drive. 😀 Still using it.

This was after 3 years. I literally RMA'd the drive with a week left in the warranty. I got very lucky, most of them died after a year.. but mine lasted 3, and I was able to pull my data off as the drive was dying.

i still have an IBM Deskstar 60 GPX working in an old Northwood computer and has yet to crash.

Yeah the gloss is a deal breaker for me for monitors. At least they're easier to clean

I've been very, very lucky with my HDDs.. especially with my computer usage habits.. on 24/7/365.

I've had two drives die on me, in 14 years. The aforementioned IBM Deskstar, and a Western Digital Expert 18gb. Fortunately, both times, I was able to get important data off as the drives were clicking and coming up with bad sectors.

Currently still using:

Maxtor 17gb
Maxtor 20gb
Maxtor 60gb
Hitachi 80gb
Seagate 160gb
Unknown 40gb laptop
Unknown 200gb laptop

Still have my first IDE harddrive, a Quantum Bigfoot 210mb. Man, that thing was kickin' compared to the two 40mb MFM drives I had before.

Also still have my first "real" harddrive purchase, a Samsung 2.5gb IDE/33 drive! w00! That thing was smokin compared to the Quantum's PIO/2. Damn thing cost like 160 bucks, too.

Good times.

Once this thing's warranty expires, assuming I still own it, I'll probably pull it open and see if the ultra-gloss sheet can be removed.

I have an 80MB hard drive from Western Digital that still works. Also a 212 MB from WD, still works too. At least they did about a year ago when I plugged them in to see what I could pull off of them. (Old DOS games FTW!)

I sent off a PVR-500 to Hauppauge, they shipped something to me, I won't have it back until Friday. I'm hoping it's a fancy new 2250 with the dual analog/digital tuners in it.
