OMG I love bows

gorcorps

aka Brandon
Bought a bow the other day. Why? Why the fuck not I say.

Actually target shooting with guns has been getting a little stale, and some friends and I decided to try something a little more difficult. I get the same enjoyment out of it as I do target shooting most guns, but it requires a much greater level of control and stability. Plus as long as I don't do anything stupid, my "ammo" is reusable.

As of now I have no immediate plans for hunting, but I wouldn't throw it out. I might not be against it down the road when I figure I'm good enough. But for now it's just targets.

I bought a Mission Riot (by Mathews) with some added accessories. Adjustable from 20 to 70lb draw weight, adjustable draw length (mine seems to be 27"), truglo front sight, etc. Pretty standard stuff these days, but I really like it.

Have fun.
I had a recurve and a compound. I like guns better. But I am sure bows can be fun.

Archery is something I've always wanted to do but I have poor upper body strength. Need to work out more I suppose. How much did that thing cost you?

More than it should have, in retrospect. A bit over $500 with everything I put on it. Pricing everything out online I could have found cheaper options, but I can't complain too much.

i haven't shot a bow in ages ..

have a look at Daikyu / Yumi bows (full- japanese bows), to me they are much better as a sport than regular or - god forbid - compounds.

failing that, medieval longbows.

ofc now that you enjoy bows, why not try a sword: http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/

Can you guys recommend a starter bow in the 200-300 dollar range? I dont wanna invest a lot in the hobby. Been a member of my local club for a year with no equipment.

Hmm, there's a training range just up the road from my work. Got a summer program starting at the end of July. $135 for six weeks, equipment included. I should check it out.

These modern compound bows don't require any strength. The bow does all the work- draws the tension, holds it for you, etc.

Not as cool or exciting than shooting a 'real' bow with your true feel through your arms, chest, hands, etc.

I got my PSE for just over $300. Been a great bow. I'll see if I can look up the model.

That's not true, and sounds like the facts people spew without ever actually handling one. You still need to roll the cam over with your pull before it reaches the 80% let off point. Once you're drawn you can hold it for a while depending on the let off... but a 70lb draw will still be 70lbs for the initial draw. How do you think they rate the draw weight of these bows? They pull the string with a scale and measure max force needed during draw. A 70lb rated bow still needs 70lbs of draw.

Yep. The only difference is how long it can be held.

Nice bow.

Again, apparently I'm the only person who hates having more than one pin on my sight on the bow. I got rid of the other pins after missing a nice 6-point one year. I've learned how to aim higher or lower, depending on distance, rather than relying on more than one pin and choosing which one to use.

I don't have a lot of experience, but I think I'd prefer 3. The 4 that this has is definitely too cluttered and I don't see how it'll be very useful. For the target shooting that I'm doing I've only been setting the top one. The rest aren't set to anything in particular.

I got one of these type of sights for my bowtech. I love that the outside ring of the scope matches up to what the peep sight view is, so it's almost ridiculously easy to keep the knock point consistent.

What size of peep are you using? I didn't care for the 1/4" size and went smaller .

Mine is 1/4, fits the 2" ring of the sight great.

Is that the goal? Right now it's smaller than the sight ring, but I find it easier to focus on pins this way. I don't know anybody else who knows how to do this properly so we're all just finding things that work for us.
