LOL. Yes. Unless they have net send enabled for a reason?

I'm going to go with my gut and say lazy IT guys vs. every one of their workstations requiring the messenger service. If that were the case, I'd say they need to update whatever app relies on the messenger service for notifying users/workstations.

Although, I bet that it just said it sent successfully (it will if you net send *) but most machines are patched and didn't get it.

Send an email to the IT security department demanding a review of security policy after your latest 'Audit'.

Well luckily nothing is happening PHEW !!!, and yes we have it enabled to automatically notify people on the updated virus def's which happen periodically once a week (i dont think it should be enabled but what the hey its not up to me), it was not sent to the users network it was sent to our own use network, i work in sys admin, but the fact of the matter is this is deemed as a security breach .. and i had a very forgiving manager .. thank god because he had to take all of the flack, and a lot people just thought it was funny ..once again thats a big PHEW!!!

I once created a batch file and shared it on the network at school on April 1st. I gave it some interesting name so a class member or something would stumble on it and click it.

.@ECHO OFF
PRINT "You've really messed up now!"
:BEGIN
NET SEND * "April Fools!"
GOTO BEGIN

Notice, there is no "END" to that. Yes, someone did take the bait (A Russian student that everyone thought was a hacker or something ;)). Even though it was only running for a few seconds (The guy knew to hit CTRL + C or Pause/Break), it was impossible to manually dismiss the hundreds of pop-up NET SEND messages. Nothing a restart wouldn't solve but needless to say, people were POed and I was LMAO.

Hehehe, I've done that but I was pretending to be the IT manager and sent it to a couple engineers in the company. They got all paranoid that he might see it or that it was actually from him.

I did that once. During a virus outbreak, there was a machine on the network that was infected and that I couldn't identify, so I sent a net send to it in case anybody was using it, and letting them know their machine was going to be shutdown and they needed to call this particular person in IT (because she supported that office).

Next thing I know, this other IT member is going off about something and it turns out I broadcasted the message to my entire subnet, and they were all calling her. Thank goodness my office was relatively small and the router blocks broadcasts.

Oh and it happened on April Fools day... so my office thought I did that on purpose...

yeah i usually have a blank batch file that i edit and use for quick commands with a pause at the end, then just execute the .bat, but this time i opened up CMD and did it through there, and somehow because i quickly typed it in i managed to miss type the command and end up broadcasting to the whole domain, pretty embarrassing really .

Some people are not in today so they will receive the message when they log back on (i think the messages only get stored for three days though so I might be lucky), people in my department were laughing their heads off anyway .. but i was crapping my pants at the time :(

We have about that many, and we're on XP without SP2. Not sure if it's because it's untested (by us) or because it breaks something, but we need messenger for our Novell software.

Friends and I used to banner each other at university. I psised one friend off so bad he tried to banner back "FCUK OFF CNUTFACE!" except it went to one of the maths professors. Cue a visit to the Sysadmin Overlord to explain that one. I felt real bad but it was funny as fvck.

Edit: I forgot, he walked into the room and the guy handed him a printout of what the professor saw. Bwahaha.
