OMG I Got My First Speeding Ticket!

I was going to work this morning and was driving 70mph on the fastlane and passed a police cruiser. The police office felt like pulling me over and gave me a fat $135 ticket. I couldn't believe it. :Q

I've been driving on this highway (route3) forever and the majority of the drivers go at least 70mph on all 3 lanes. So I didn't even consider him pulling me over. The police office was going at least 66-67 and pulled me over so he was also technically over the speed limit. The only reason IMO, he pulled me over was that it was an easy citation for him because people drive 80mph+ on the fast lane...

My question is, what are my chances of reducing the citation fee? 😕

Note: This is my first speeding ticket ever and I got my license in 2000 in Massachusetts.

first offense, you may able to get out of it with traffic school and a fine, with no points...depends on what kind of mood the judge is in, really...

go to court and plead guilty. judge will usually reduce fine. If your state has a traffic school option, the point won't show up in the record. but i don't know about the law in mass.

From what I hear, if you go to court the cop usually wont show up. But..meh.

nope, they will MOST LIKELY SHOW UP.

however, if this is your first time, goto court, they will reduce it...

for me, first time it was reduced to just a warning and i had to behave for next 6 months 😉 and fee was just court fee.

always better to goto court. of course it will waste a whole day and make u feel like crap.. but oh well...

Yep. Or in some states, you can merely request court supervision. And if you remain good for the term of that supervision, the ticket never appears on your record.

You need to ask around in your local area. Maybe consult a lawyer.

so you passed a cop car going 15 over and expect nothing to happen?

Yeah, didn't know cops are anal. I didn't even consider my speeds was "over" the limit considering what people usually drive at.

Next time I see a cop, i'm pulling over and slashing my tires.

just don't pass a cop unless someone else has done it. you'd usually see a line of cars behind the cop car because nobody wants to take the risk.

Yep. Wont work in IL. Your first appearence is to merely plea. If you plea not guilty, a court date is set and the cop WILL show up.

Traffic school and/or court supervision is your best bet. Again, ask around your local area or better yet, ask a lawyer.

I did that once, and I'll never do it again.

Should I plead innocent or guilty? Or does it matter since its my first offense?

Find out if there is a traffic school and/or court supervision option.

I found out by calling my local court house.

dammit, I suppose the lawyer will charge a fee?

just go there without a lawyer, plead guilty and ask for supervision.

well, this is in IL, just ask someone to see if this is true in your state.

GL.

and YES, cops are ANAL jackass pigs 😛 except the ocassional honest ones 😛

Yes, but first try calling your local court house.

At any rate, a lawyer is cheaper than the increase on your insurance for the next three years.

Just take defensive driving.

And stop speeding. 😛

Hey, I am a defensive driver! I jsut don't go 30mph on the highway. I'm courteous too, I usually let people pass. 😉
