This is why I make people back up their own files before I work on their computer. Otherwise, I tell them that I'm just going to delete everything. How big were the files and what type of files were they?

try a different computer maybe. if the cd was written something has to be able to read it.

as my own personal rule of thumb i never back up to cds for this reason. and i always back up in at least two locations.

try to read it on the computer that the disc was burnt on.

Can you try to recover the files off the hard drive with recovery software. So long as they have only been overwritten once it may still be possible to save them with out spending much more then the cost of some software. If they've been overwritten multiple times its going to take a pro and a couple hundred dollars.

What did you use to burn the files with? Like, did you use Nero, or did you use some kind of packet-writing software, or what?

Sure are a lot of double post, here...
Hmm...I say try some recovery software. Download.com has some for trials. Use the trial and see if you can find the files. If you can, buy some software and then recover...

If you do much of this type of work, get yourself a USB flash drive or something.

Did the system have a third-party burner software package installed at the time? Nero, Roxio, ???

I don't trust CD/DVD for stuff like this. I've seen too many bad CDs and DVDs to make them my ONLY copy of important data. I use them for burning music and movies.

My preference is for external USB drives. They can fail, too, but the odds are pretty low. As somebody already mentioned, multiple backups are even nicer.

a: you should have made sure the cd had the data on it
b: you should have copied the data to a networked drive

wait how did you burn the files with a different computer? did you transfer them to that one and after burning them delete them? or just burn them through the network?

if you had transfered them to another computer b4 burning them you should be able to recover them off that hd with the proper software

even if you can find the temp file it was burned with, it will be difficult to force the burning software to recognize it and distribute the files within

If you haven't used the computer where you re-installed Windows, you MIGHT be able to recover some of the lost data from that hard drive. It'd be best to remove the hard drive, put it in another PC as a secondary hard drive, and analyze the drive with file recovery software.

When you re-format hard drives, it doesn't erase data. Re-installing Windows WILL write over some of the drive, but it's possible that some of the important data is still readable on that hard drive.

Greetings,

In your situation, you can mind data can be still on the drive, even if you formatted it. For that, you can exploit data recovery tools, that can restore lost data. Just I myself got into simmilar problem when vital data was lost. And really, Undelete (the recovery tool I use) was perfectly able to bring files back.
