I was working on my PC put everything back together and turned it on. was working for a while when all of a sudden, memory dump. OMG. I wasn't sure what it was. tried a couple of different things, still no go, PC just wouldn't boot. then all of a sudden i thought, hey did i plug the hs fan in? OMG, i hadn't plugged the fan in. So plug it in and start her up, check bios temp and the cpu is at 78 C that's after the thing had been off almost 30 min.

she's up and running now, seems a bit sluggish tho. not sure what kind of damage my cpu (the one in my sig) sustained. only time will tell i guess. all i can say is i'm thankful the thing is running at all.

I didn't know you were an alchemist, cool, you just turned your T-Bird 133 into a Cyrix 200. ;)

That's why it's wise to enable temp protection in the bios. It won't protect you from not putting on the HSF, but it will help if the HSF is misalligned or unplugged.

actually I ran sandra on it and basically it's running the same as it did before. i had to wait for it to cool down tho. it is running at approximately 30 c.

whew, what a relief.

Seems like this DISEASE is going arounf. Same damn thing happened to me. I have so many cables in my ccase that I thought it was all set. After the restart(I had set bios to restart at 60 C) I checked, and to my surprise, the heatsink was very hot.

Since you noticed your alpha got very hot, you can imagine hwat would have happened with a lesser heatsink... :(

in my opinion this is validation that the alpha 8045 is the best hs out there. the only other hs that i can think of that might have saved my cpu under the same circumstances would be the swifty and i'm not sure that even that would have done it.
