Not to sound stupid, but what exactly is a GUID?

From the example, it looks like a key from the Windows Registry to me. And if you think about it, the number of hexadecimal digits used almost guarantees a unique number!

static911, a guid is a way to register objects when you write them, visual studio will generate these numbers for you for free they are a uniquie identifier for com objects, the fact is that you dont have to know what they are but if you didnt know you probably wouldnt bid on it.

another (and main) use for GUID is your user login your guid holds all your access rights and permissions.

All your SID's are gathered and login and put into one GUID.

Heres just a sampling of some of the GUIDs we have available:
  • {bc8c1d95-c9ce-4b4e-823b-984069cd1adf}
  • {1f98d586-72f3-4057-8759-fc7383cc4d56}
  • {1f98d586-72f3-4057-8759-fc7383cc4d56}
  • {93c9c526-7449-4c32-a5ec-ecab36f93707}

Look at the second and the third...Uniques GUID!
MY ASS

BTW, Windows Installer is able to generate a random GUID from its DB when you create/repackage a program. Taken from the Microsoft Windows Installer 1.5 SDK.

GUIDs SIDS and RIDs are the basis for win2k security and object management.
