Yes, funding for Ariadne -- they have a new lab director this year and he loves it!!!! We're going to ask for a driving simulator in a couple of weeks... this is going to be a kick ass year!

Microsoft decided to kick in $18K, and Bosch, $25K as well.

:) :) :) :)

(Ariadne is the dialogue manager I've mentioned before in this thread:

Good question -- I don't think we will use all that money up.

here's the cliff notes on this years' plan for Ariadne:

Abstract:

Driver distraction is one of the major concerns surrounding telematics systems within automobiles today. While a voice interface provided by a dialogue manager is considerably less distracting than a touch screen, it still does distract the driver. With this project, we are hoping to accomplish the following goals:

1. Determine what stimuli are indications of the driver being occupied. Things such as the amount of throttle pressure, the amount of traffic congestion, and the structure of the road will be investigated. Also, each driver will have a ?profile? of his or her preferences.
2. Utilizing a driving simulation, determine the effect of the added distraction of using a standard (non adaptive) dialogue manager (Ariadne), by measuring things such as lap times and number of crashes.
3. Create a new version of Ariadne, which decides to remain quiet while in situations that require higher concentration, and speak mostly when the driver is less occupied.
4. Gauge the effect of the less distracting dialogue manager on people?s performance in the driving simulation.
5. If the studies with the driving simulation are completed in time, utilize the Carnegie Mellon NavLab project as a real-time data feed to make Ariadne adapt in real time to traffic conditions, and to the driver?s concentration level.

scariest part about this is that I'll have to reconsider my choice of vehicle... only GM products I like are the Cadillac CTS-V that is coming out soon, and the Corvette Z06... maybe I could ask them to borrow an old 87 black Trans-am for the project...

So... need any research assistants? or Beta testers?
I really think you've got a cool idea.
BTW: Any chance I could have a copy of this software... this could really be usefull even for home entertainment.

Beta testers? No, not anymore -- over the last year I've made Ariadne quite stable (and it's *gasp* -- a Win32 app), and it generally uses up only 30 MB of RAM now, though more for huge databases.

Research Assistants? Yes. But you gotta be CMU affiliated to be one. Current CMU students are welcome to PM me.

Very cool  , congratulations!

My nephew Craig, super Geek that put up FreeMcOwen.com initially lives up there in Pittsburgh. Check out his website at PCMan.net , his house talks to him all the time.

If they have one, it's yours. Drivers would KILL for a voice interface that works, and I get the feeling that GM knows it :p

Though a newer vehicle may be a better choice - you could interface with the car directly for a good bit of the input regarding the motion of the vehicle and such.

With regards to home entertainment, I have already partnered with a company to do that -- we are doing a demonstration of it for that exact purpose at the Winter CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2004 in Las Vegas, January 8th - 11th.

We have a few goals with this demo, in addition to making a kick ass product for the home, we plan to make Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center people go nuts. ;)

Haha -- so Patrick Popp, the new director of the lab at GM, was actually the *founder* of the BMW Tech. office in Palo Alto, which was err... responsible for the horrible I-Drive thing in the BMW 7 series. He was a major propenent for BMW and Stanford working togther -- the 7 Series door that stays open at any angle was designed by one of Stanford's undergraduate Mech. E classes. He got headhunted into GM by Christian and Timbers, and seems like a real mover and shaker -- I like him already!

The old Lab manager at GM, Jim Rillings, retired prior to this summer, and he thought Ariadne was "too far out to be practical" and he proceeded to reject me for an internship there for Summer 2002. So I appreciate the new blood, and the BMW heritage!

When this is all said and done, maybe I'll go and get Ozzy to give it a test drive -- that would be great marketing!
