Good question -- I don't think we will use all that money up.
here's the cliff notes on this years' plan for Ariadne:
Abstract:
Driver distraction is one of the major concerns surrounding telematics systems within automobiles today. While a voice interface provided by a dialogue manager is considerably less distracting than a touch screen, it still does distract the driver. With this project, we are hoping to accomplish the following goals:
1. Determine what stimuli are indications of the driver being occupied. Things such as the amount of throttle pressure, the amount of traffic congestion, and the structure of the road will be investigated. Also, each driver will have a ?profile? of his or her preferences.
2. Utilizing a driving simulation, determine the effect of the added distraction of using a standard (non adaptive) dialogue manager (Ariadne), by measuring things such as lap times and number of crashes.
3. Create a new version of Ariadne, which decides to remain quiet while in situations that require higher concentration, and speak mostly when the driver is less occupied.
4. Gauge the effect of the less distracting dialogue manager on people?s performance in the driving simulation.
5. If the studies with the driving simulation are completed in time, utilize the Carnegie Mellon NavLab project as a real-time data feed to make Ariadne adapt in real time to traffic conditions, and to the driver?s concentration level.
