OMG Firewire Issues
ok, so i finally needs some HEP.

i have a shitty computer here that belongs to the family, sister decided to get into DV editing and actually went out and bought software (silly sister). it came with a firewire card and the computar refuses to recognize it. my linux box says "OMG HI2U" when i threw it in there, so i thought it might be an issue with teh shitty windows. so after playing with some knoppix, suse, and gentoo live demos and viewing the pci bus, the facker refuses to show up. i have tried virtually everything. pulled out every pci card and have tried every slot..... the fncker is just ded according to the computar macheine. the pci bus scans under the nix tests show that it is not there either. however there is a sound card and a modem that i can put on any pci and it works fine.....

/me is stumped

so, here i come to the wise resource which is anand.... next resort is going to best buy and making them install it just for the hell of it so i can laugh at them suffer too.

sorry for the typos.... i come from genmay and it is how we speak over in the lands of retardia

Maybe it's just me totally misunderstanding your pretty anti Windows spill above but just so you know this for sure Windows will need you to install some drivers (supplied on the CD) for it to fully recognize the Firewire IEEE1394 card.

ok, sorry for being a bit vague.

mobo is a shuttle AI61 and the card is a Lucent chipset. more or less brandless due to it being supplied with the software (Pinnacle Studio 8)
The software we originally got at Tiger, but I have already exchanged it once at Best Buy and am having the same problems.
the OS being used is Win2k, but I have tried Knoppix, Suse, and Gentoo live CD demos to see if they would recognize it... all shot down
All latest drivers are installed.

I have already tried such fun things as taking out every other PCI card and have tried the firewire in every slot. The pci bus scan in linux tells me that nothing is there.... but i know the card is functional. I have reset the BIOS and gone from there and still nothing. So, pretty much, it has been a fun day.

the problem isnt a simple "It is having minor issues".. the computer refuses to recognize that it exists. I have played with some messed up systems and gotten them to work again, but this has me stumped.

I bought a noname Lucent chipset card and it wouldn't get recognized in any PCI slot (Windows 2000, Celeron Asus P2B). They tried it in the store, and it was recognized, but it locked the tech guy's test computer hard. So I replaced it with an Iwill VIA chipset one, and it worked fine right away with no drivers. Also works fine now that I'm using Windows XP. I use it with 5 different peripherals and it has worked well with all. I think I spent about $30 a year or so ago. Should be under $25 by now I'm guessing.

See my post above. I have never installed 3rd party drivers for my Iwill Firewire card.

I had the same problem with a lucent chip 1394 card that was bundled with some external DVD burners I was installing for my work. Also had to swap them out and I was also running win2k on the machines.

nah, not really a gamer all that much. i have just been corrupted after 4 years of being on forums. genmay i blame for most of it. basically there are no rules there, so everything that could go insane, does go insane. along with the rampant goatse and worse, we get amusing threads such as this one... http://207.44.194.54/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66991 . there is no order there. we are the only major forum with a kiddie corral... it is so sad.

as far as the fw card goes, i am of the opinion that it hates me and it hates the machine that it is supposed to go into. so i have decided to not care about it, and go back up to uni in a few weeks and forget about the entire affair. If i ignore the ghey lucent chipset card, it will go away.
