Hasn't it been at the last five or six E3 conventions? Maybe they haven't completed a working demo yet, it's only been about six years since the game's development began....

gasp!

Still, game companies finally escaped the "superhero curse" and got Freedom Force out the door, so there's hope that Duke will be released this decade, and (a little less) hope that it won't just be a total conversion mod for Daikatana II.

Its been five years.

They've had working demos, just they havent shown them publically. They switched from the Quake 2 engine to the UT engine after the what first 18 months of development? They may have switched engines again, because UT would be horribly outdated with the DoomIII engine and the UT2 engine... Here to 2-3 more years of DNF not being released..

If you were in high school when the game was announced, you're probably have finished college and have a family full of kids by now.

Notice how they didn't say which October? That's no accident ;)

Several retailers have TFC2 as preorder for October 1st.

I would think if they were in a position to release in October they would show the game at E3, unless they are flat-out embarrassed of what they have at this moment. I loved DN3D enough to retain some hope that the game will be produced, and that it will be cool. It seems clear to me that TF2 will be amazing, and in spite of the massive delays I would still say Valve is one of the most credible development houses around - they have almost singlehandedly led the evolution of online gaming for the last three years or so.

This is gonna have to be f**king impressive to make up for taking 15 years to develop.

But haven't they made only one game basically?

LOL

If any software takes this long to develop, it's likely because there is a problem with the team.

You choose to see the glass as half-empty, where I choose to see it half-full ;). They produced Half-Life, which to me was revolutionary and still probably my favorite game of all time. They subsequently produced Team Fortress Classic and Death Match Classic (both of which were admittedly largely ports from Quake), and subsidized the makers of CS in their efforts. They have continued to evolve and improve the net code, and added any number of innovations to it, most recently the addition of voice communication. Everything since the release of Half-Life was done at their expense and released to the gaming community for free. By all appearances, TF2 is the most ambitious project in the history of online gaming, and all of the materials they have released from it look amazing. So, to answer your question, yes, they have only made one game, but they are still batting 1,000 in my mind, and continuing to innovate.
