OMG COMPUTER WON'T BOOT!!!

hey guys i'm really new to this forum so please don't kill the first poste.

Anyways, yesterday i had window xp on the hd and ubuntu on a partition. Today, i stupidely deleted linux from my computer through windows partition manager without knowing what i'm doing. So...now my computer won't boot up anymore. Once i get to the *Boot from CD* state it displays Grub loading state 1.5...please wait...error17 and i can't get past that state no matter what i do. I've tried putting back the linux (ubuntu) CD and it won't boot from it. I'm stumped... Can anyone help me please???

Boot using the windows cd, do a repair and take the recovery console option.

C:\> fixmbr
C:\> fixboot

*reboot*

thanks guys, but i happened to mess around with it myself a bit and now it works...to some degree. The problem i have now is that i have window xp installed in many places in alot of drives...So now my os selection menue has 2 window xp pros, window xp home, and C:\WINDOWS (which is the one that i use). How do i get rid of all these things?!

Right click on My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced Tab --> In theStartup and Recovery Section click Settings --> Click Edit.

This will show you all the OS's that the Windows Bootloader sees. Delete all the entries except for the "C:\Windows" one, or whatever OS you select to boot is named.

Do what TGS said to do in the first reply to your post. You need to repair your master boot record.
"Boot using the windows cd, do a repair and take the recovery console option."

C:\> fixmbr
C:\> fixboot

This has worked for me more than a few times times when I hosed my mbr trying to dual boot with XP 🙂

Is it getting to the menu to pick which OS version to boot into, just without any options?

Boot off the CD and see if you can read whats in your c:\boot.ini

Load up with boot cd, with the recovery console again.

I'm assuming you mean this screen is blank. Though if you've reached this point, and you didn't have any trouble at the recovery console prompting for a boot disk, you should probably be past this area.

Here is another example of how to make an active partition. Though I'm still thinking that using fixmbr and fixboot should clear your boot problems.

Assuming you were able to boot successfully into windows, via the grub boot loader, prior to this incident?

Edit: You may have inadvertantly deleted the correct latest install boot.ini entry. If you can, how is your Windows installation set up? IE Partition 2 on physical disk 1...

Post your current boot.ini, and I think we can get a correct entry for you to plug back in. If anything you may just want to try a repair at this point, and see if windows will detect the previous install and replace the files or entries that it requires to boot.

i dont have access to my computer right now but i'll get the exact information to you asap. I currently know that the blank screen is a blank scree. Nothing on the screen, no writing no nothing. I've tried both fixmbr and fixboot none of them seemed to have worked. yes i once had windows booting prior to this incident.

Well right now my hd is partitioned into a 65gb partition and a 9gb partition, both with windows installed onto it.

What i don't get is how do i get the boot cd to show my boot.ini file?

thanks for the help 😀 if this works, you're my hero~!

[edit] on yeah, does it make a difference if i have Windows XP professional original release?

See if you can do a repair, should be the R options rather than the C option.

If you try to go to the recovery console it should prompt you which installed location you want to log into. Whichever was your most recent install, log into that partition. You should be able to "cd c:" and edit your boot.ini.

Though again, if everything is working up to this point, a repair might be able to save you some headache into finding what exactly is preventing the windows os from loading.

so i put in boot disk, wait for it to load. Press R for recovery counsel. Type 1 for C:\WINDOWS, pass admin password (dont have one) and type cd C:?
