Most of the high-end custom A/V shops don't have much media center PC experience though, and homebuilt systems can go much farther than the XP Media Center PCs sold at Best Buy etc.. Loaded with the right software (Linux-based or Windows XP) I could sell one at a sweet markup. Car-based PCs would be fun to build too!

I'd be careful doing cars at that level. When you start going that far out, you get VERY touchy customers. Last thing you want is some guy screaming cause you yoinked up his Lotus dash and you cant fix it.... Or have to pay for the dealer too!

GPS - $130
LCD - $270
Mobo (ASUS MicroATX w/ sound + video)- $80
Processor(AthlonXP2000+) - $60
512MB RAM - $70
40GB - $50
Wiring/Power - $200

So around $900 plus labor?

Personally unless you really need the cpu power I would suggest a Epia M10000N instead of the mATX+XP combo due to space, heat (do you really want an XP in the trunk or wherever during the summer?) , and power (the Opus is rated at 150W, to go higher you may need a less readily available psu or run an inverter, which is inefficient and introduces noise problems) considerations.

Good point, plus its smaller and cheaper. How fast is a 800Mhz Epia?

pretty bad ~300Mhz celeron

You don't have to show me, I own one. Makes a good desktop, I have a minimal install of Win98 on it and am trying to make a boot from a cd and use a ramdisk. I also have a Epia 5000 (security cam + web server). And a M10000N (my carpc, though nowhere near as poshiled as that one). And a M9000 (my old carpc, can't figure out what to do with it anymore).
