OMG - AMD Buys ATI

I am almost certain AMD didnt buy ATI. I have been wrong in teh past, I will be wrong again, but I dont think I am wrong this time.

Been discussed before that it wouldnt make sense for AMD to buy ATI, and I would ahve to agree it would be silly for them to do.

That's too old an article. AMD is trying to buy ATI but it sounds like a hostile takeover if it happens...With ATI fighting it it might not happen. Would be interesting if it did happen just to see what AMD would change/do with ATI.

actually bill gates just bought apple, intel, amd, nvidia, and ati. he left out sis and via because he didnt think he needed additional companies.

but wow if amd really did buy ati. last i heard, the rumors were false about it.

No, No, No, No, No, No.

Pepsi purchased AMD.
3M nabbed Coke.
Sony got Ashley Furniture.
And they are all folding up just to make Bill Gates happy.

It is still uncertain whether it is a merger yet. So, I think it is premature to say AMD buys ATI.

The PR should be out by end of next week though.

Hmm, my estimation of official PR missed by 3 weeks. Anyway, it is no news that there have been ongoing talks and negotiations between AMD and ATI regarding a possible merger or a buy out.

While I think this is true, that AMD will not buy ATI, something will never be 'confirmed' by the inquirer... lol

QFT..omg so true.

I don't think it will happen. Both have very different outlooks, processor and graphics cards primarily. It would ruin the trend to focus on what they do best.

Unlike HP and Compaq, they both are generally cloning companies that mass produce a product line where they become (became) a vendor for prebuilt systems.

However, anything is possible. Personally I still don't think it will happen.

Read this link.

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.N: Quote), the No. 2 supplier of computer processors, is close to a deal to buy graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT.O: Quote) (ATY.TO: Quote) for $5.5 billion, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday.

Such a deal would shake up the processor industry, which is witnessing a tooth-and-nail fight for market share between AMD and larger rival Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote). AMD would gain one of two major graphics chips makers, the other being Nvidia Corp.

(NVDA.O: Quote).

Markham, Ontario-based ATI is also a big supplier of chipsets -- the cluster of secondary chips and interfaces that surround a computer's processor -- for AMD and Intel products.

Unless talks break down, a deal could be announced as early as Monday, the source said.

Don't know what to say about this if it's true. Always thought ATI being Canadian was cool, but then again, I don't exactly buy their stuff much...

Well, the heads at AMD certainly want ATI, no question....

"Reports claim a $5.6B deal is about to close on an unprecedented merger

According to a report in The Globe and Mail, the board of directors at AMD has allegedly approved the takeover of Canadian graphics firm ATI Technologies. The reports said that the information was released by an investment banker that was part of the discussions. According to other sources, AMD executives were also seen at ATI's headquarters in Thornhill, Ontario. The report indicated that AMD is considering a $5.6 billion takeover bid for ATI.

Speculation and rumors have run rampant over the last several months about the possible merger between AMD and ATI, but no concrete details have been revealed. According to reports on ATI's share prices, the company's shares have been trading at double the usual volume today. Analysts said that AMD would be making an offer of 20 to 40 percent premium to ATI's current share price. ATI shares traded at $16.12 on the NASDAQ today during after hours, which is up 39 cents from yesterday's closing.

Edit, Anand has a nice blog entry up where he talks about the possible merger. He's a little more optimistic about the possible outcomes than some others, including myself....
