Sorry for your loss of time... I know how aggravating that is, personally (I do large FE simulations at home, frequently).

I know little to nothing about the graphics world (other than what I need to plot my FE models).... so this may not be of use to you... but one technique that I use is an intermittent "start-restart" technique. With a lot of my FE models, I stop them every three hours or so, dump the results, and then use the results to "restart" the analysis where it left off. That way I can, at most, lose three hours of work. IF you have the ability to do so, see if you can write a batch file to do this technique--it might help you out quite a bit.

Good luck!

With the default max scanline renderer I'm pretty sure you can't do anything like that. I guess they figure rendering a single frame, even at high res, shouldn't take more than a few hours... I know Brazil can divide up the frame into chunks to be processed, so it may be possible to do it with that...

Is Brazil a plug-in renderer for Max?

Here's my latest version of the guitar. I completely re-modelled the body and tailpiece. I also added a pick guard and re-did all the metal materials. Sooo much better IMO.

oh, and I made it 1600x1200... so it's desktop size *hint hint* hehe

🙂

Looks good, but where are the strings? Are there supposed to be any?

I'm not done yet 🙂

I need strings, tone/volume knobs, fret inlays (just did that), pick guard support, strap nuts, back plates, headstock, tuning pegs...

that sounds really cool, with the glass/water text. mind posting it for us if you finish it in 12 days? 🙂

Eh, I gave up on it. I'm gonna finally finish this guitar for now, and then I'm going to work on something new.

When the power returns, do they turn the supply back to the wall and let your computer keep running? If so, then it would have helped.

yes. otherwise it wouldn't be an Uninterruptible Power Supply. 🙂

sounds like you lost 12 days of rendering, not work. as in, 12 days of having your machine tied up. you did save the original image, right? were you rendering to file? how much did you end up getting?

Edit: i wouldn't recommend running SETI while rendering. what other things do you have tying up your processor while rendering images? this might help to explain why it took so long to render..

I was rendering to a file, but it doesn't save progress. It renders the image, and then saves the file once it's done. It was almost done (80% of the pixels done, but the last 10% would have taken no time at all).

So, I got nothing. Doesn't matter though.
