My friend brought his ASUS motherboard over, Skt 478 and it had a 2.20 Celeron in it.. So I put it in my case with my 6600GT/80GB wd 7.2K ATA/300w Antec PSU/512x2 Dual-Channel RAM... Now after post somtimes BIOS will come up and say CPU hung becasue of speed setup, but the speed was on 2200... also my monitor somtimes shuts off and gets a video cable connected when we go past post screen or when we restart the PC.. We are currently trying to install Windows XP but it won't go past the hardware setup page. It was also somtimes flicker on the screen and the screen will go to the standby and if we press enter a couple times it comes back...

based on the info provided i'm going to take a stab in the dark and say 300W is barely enough, if enough at all - for that system. if you are planning on keeping it together for any length of time, it would be worth your while to upgrade the PSU.

not saying that's the solution to your problems but it's a good start imho.

its a Asus w697-p4sdx

I doubt its the PSU as we ran it with one stick of 512 RAM, the 80 GB HDD, CD-RW drive, Videocard and other essentials. Also we successfully installed and ran Linux.

this is fine that the PSU is not stressed with these components, however if you experience the issues after you add more components (drawing more power from the PSU) - then it becomes even more likely that it is a power issue. wouldn't you agree? 🙂

The problems persisting I highly doubt are from my PSU.. I have ran a fully capible system on this PSU that requires MORE wattage. The problems are:

Somtimes screen flickers then goes off after post.
When we set HDD to Master it goes to BIOS and lags.
When we set HDD to slave it works fine, but for some reason windows XP won't install..
Somtimes randomly the computer will shut the monitor off, making us press enter 3 times which only "somtimes" helps.. We ran off Video, 1 Stick ram and switched, and even without/with the HDD, problems still persisted.. We once got a screen saying check your hardware, but that doesn't come back.. and as my friend said, we successfully installed Linux and ran it.. So can anyone help?

(symptoms sound like ECC ram instead of non-buffered ram)

The opposite of ECC is non-ECC. The opposite of registered is unbuffered. They're two different things, and you can have RAM that is both, one, the other, or neither.
