Well, as much as I don't agree with that kind of a punishment, I'm glad to see the men getting some of that treatment in those Muslim countries for once!

<< link S. Arabia Man to Get 4,750 Lashes E-Mail This Article Printer-Friendly Version Subscribe to The Post The Associated Press Sunday, February 17, 2002; 6:32 PM RIYADH, Saudi Arabia ?? A Saudi court has sentenced a man to six years in prison and 4,750 lashes for having sex with his wife's sister, a newspaper reported Sunday. The woman involved in the case was sentenced to six months in jail and 65 lashes, the paper Al-Eqtisadiah reported, though the court found she had not consented to the relationship. She had also reported the affair to the police. Having a relationship with one's in-law is considered a serious offense under the strict Islamic judicial code that Saudi Arabia follows. The court, in the port city of Jiddah, ordered that the lashes be administered to the man at a rate of 95 at a time. Lashes are often handed out by Saudi courts, although rarely in such large numbers. The court also ruled he was not eligible for a pardon "because of the ugliness and seriousness of his crime." >>

He deserves it! although the lashes seem too many for any living organism but what he did was horrible and a great dishonor/disrespect to his wife. Shame on himm ..

That's the part I'm having trouble with. The women is apparently raped and reports it to the police. She then gets six months in jail and 65 lashes.

Something is wrong in that country.

I'd certainly agree with you on that point !

I'm still confused. I have done some reading on Sharia tonight and still do not understand this ruling. Can anyone explain why or how the women who was raped is guilty of a crime.

If you can shed some light on this case also, I would appreciate it.

Nigeria: Woman Sentenced to Death Under Sharia

The Islamic court in Gwadabawa, Sokoto State, in northern Nigeria sentenced Ms. Tungar-Tudu to death after finding her guilty of having pre-marital sex, a punishable offense under Sharia law. Ms. Tungar-Tudu, who is pregnant, has until November 8 to file an appeal. The court's ruling is pending approval by the governor of Sokoto State after which a date to mete out the punishment will be fixed. The man she allegedly had sex with was set free by the same court after concluding that it lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute him for the alleged adultery.

If there is not enough evidence to prosecute the man for the alleged adultery how can there be enough evidence to convict the women?

Still hoping that someone that understands sharia can stop in and help with some explanations.

Afghanistan retains strict sharia law
Afghanistan retains strict sharia law
Afghanistan's new government will still impose sharia Islamic law on its people but will act less harshly than the deposed Taliban regime, Justice Minister Abdul Rahim Karimi said.
The fundamentalist Taliban's five-year rule which ended this month was marked by public amputations for thieves as well as executions and corporal punishment for other crimes.
"Our Islam is different," Karimi told AFP. "How can you cut off the hand of a man who has nothing to eat? We must first feed the people and give them a livelihood."
But Karimi said sharia law would remain in force. "People would not understand if we got rid of it." It was not clear what punishments would be meted out under the new administration.
Karimi took up his post on Monday after the six-month interim government was sworn in last Saturday. His comments were more moderate than those of a leading judge last week.
Judge Ahamat Ullha Zarif told AFP that public executions and amputations would continue in accordance with sharia law but justice would be applied fairly and with mercy.
"There will be some changes from the time of the Taliban," he said.
"For example, the Taliban used to hang the victim's body in public for four days. We will only hang the body for a short time, say 15 minutes."
Kabul's sports stadium, where the Taliban used to carry out public executions and amputations every Friday, would no longer be used.
"The stadium is for sports. We will find a new place for public executions," he said.
Adulterers, both male and female, would still be stoned to death, Zarif said, "but we will use only small stones."
This allowed the condemned person a chance to escape. "If they are able to run away, they are free."
The chance of freedom would apply only to those who confessed their adultery.
"Those who refuse to confess their wrongdoing and are condemned by a judge will have their hands and feet bound so that they cannot run away. They will certainly be stoned to death," Zarif said.
He promised however proper investigations of suspects and fair trials.

<< Why anyone, especially a woman, would choose to live there is beyond me...However they do..so not much we can do about it, I'm kind of immune to it by now. I used to care about what happened to people over there >>

Most of these people were born there they don't know any other way. Trust me Women aren't flocking to get beaten for being raped.
