So first I chipped my 2000+ tho it still works somewhat.....

I order a 2400+ from newegg along with a shim so this doesnt happen again.

I just got it a few hours ago, get everything installed and boom, by computer doesnt even start. sigh....

Hmmmm....some how water got on my motherboard (water cooling) so dry it all up and put my 2000+ back in to test. Boots up!

Put the 2400+ back in, push the start button.....waiting waiting........Why isnt my screen coming on? SIGH

Take the cpu out again....sniff sniff, what the hell is that smell? Im sure you can guess by now.......

Sure enough my new 2400+ that Iv had for only an hour is fried, :( :( :( the AS5 on top was a light pale color compared to its normal drak gray.

So not I can only hope newegg will take it back and send me another one.

And I suppose your all wondering how this happen? Well the shim is a rather tight fit around the rubber pads, in fact I had to readjust the thing 4 times to make sure it was on all the way before putting the waterblock on but I guess while putting the WB on one corner popped up again and on to the rubber pad which caused it not to come in to contact with the core.

I think Id rather be hit by lightning....

Did I read this correctly ... ?

Your going to RMA that chip that you destroyed...?
(screwing Newegg?)

I wouldn't be telling others your doing deceptive practices... It make YOU look bad.

I destroyed the cpu by using a shim that I bought from newegg, and just so you dont think Im that evil, I even explain that it could have been DOA or could have been a problem with the shim that I bought from them.

Also, since the cpu wasnt even hot when I took it out, Id almost guess it was dead anyways.

From what I read from your post ...

You spilled water on your MB ...

and ... was unable to think of removing/adjusting the chip rubber pads,,, before using the shim ..?
(and you probably warpped ths shim in the process)

I'd say your in denial.

I've never used water cooling yet but, if water got out does that mean that air got in? Could that have been the reason that your processor bit the big byte? I ordered an XP2400+ from Newegg. It was defective and I rma'd it elsewhere. I was sent a Barton XP2500+. Of course, I don't have a 333mhz fsb mainboard.

I think I will stick to air cooling and my trusty screwdriver heatsink installation tool. AMD retail heatsinks rock on an underclocked Barton! :D:beer:

DOA?? No, you wouldn't have smelled the warm smell of SHUT THE HE11 UP! You fried that chip and you know it...And now you want the egg to fix you stupidity??? People like you are what causes companies like Newegg to get harder on RMA policies and make it hard for honest people with real defective hardware to get an RMA. I mean c'mon, if you knew what you were doing in the first place, you wouldn't have had to order a new chip! NUmb nutz!

Sorry, my rant is over...

Don't be a scumbag, you poked da poodle, you should have to eat the cost. BTW, what board do you own? You can't fry your CPU in most nF2 boards, most assuredly not my Solteks.

The water came before I had even put the cpu in at all and then I tested my 2000+ before the 2400+ as for the shim its still flat as cane be but its a tight fit. I thought at first I was going to rip one of the pads off while trying to get the shim to fit right..

I realize that most of it is my fault, if I had known the shim that have caused a problem like this to happen I wouldnt have used it.

AND IF I THEY WONT RMA THENI I"LL SIMPLE BUY ANOTHER FROM

And your all making it sound like Im trying to screw the world over, HELLO! I told them that it could have been my fault! However I know for a fact that if I hadnt used the shim, none of this would have happened.

wrong ... If you had removed the rubber pads ,,, or moved them for the shim to flat fit...
(I mean ... cummon ! ,,, they are just sticky pads !)

none of this would have happened...

... and I'd say you must have been trying a long time to boot that CPU ...
(without looking at BIOS temps,,, most users go into BIOS to check CPU settings and temps)

... cuz ... they just dont 'fry' that easy ...

Well believe me or not, but I put the waterblock on, pushed the power button. Heard all my drives startup but it never posted, turned it off and reset the bios, tried again with the same thing. At first I thought my motherboard didnt support it (KT333 dragon Ultra Plat) so I went about talking the cpu out and that is when I smelled as if something was burning.

I didnt think the chip would cook so fast either, perhaps there was something wrong with it to begine with. I dunno and I told Newegg in the rma request that it could very well have been my fault. If they decided to send me another one then I'll be very thankfully and buy from them all the time and if they dont......well then I'll just but another one and this time I wont use the shim.

Just because Newegg is 'good' about RMA'ing... doesnt mean it should be abused.

Good luck on whatever decision you make.

Exactly....

As long as he explained the whole situation to them in the RMA request, then it is up to tham. I'm sure they'll look at his history...and base there decision on that...retailers usually aren't @ssholes..... good ones anyways....

I use a shim, just to protect my investment of a 2700 because I was trying on a new heavy heatsink 947u. My thing works fine. I don't like shims though. I guess it could go either way.

That is the reason why AMD had to go with new 64 with a heatsink on, just like Pentium has. No more exposed bridges though.

That is what I am hopping on, not only is this my first time RMAing something back to Newegg, this is my first time RMAing anything back to anyone.

- A chipped Core
- A Water soaked Mobo
- A Fried CPU

Just slow down and take a little more care. More haste, less speed.

Uhmmm.. Heh. I do believe the only shim newegg sells is *NOT* Barton compatible. Read the reviews, it says it's too tall and you'll smoke your chip because your HS makes no contact with the core.

Right here.

NewEgg

OHHHHHHHH And then thermaltakes webpage!

TT
APPLICATION
AMD DURON SERIES
ATHLON AND ATHLON MP/XP SERIES
not for Barton

You smoked it dude.. it's not DOA

Whatever, you smoked it. You're just making up excuses. DOA chips don't get hot like that.

Ya don't gotta be THAT mean to the guy...
DragonFire, unfortunately this does sound like it's your fault... if they choose to replace it for you for free, you lucked out. It doesn't take long for a CPU to fry without a heatsink on it... think about it... your XP2400 creates about 75 watts of heat at idle... all of this is generated from an area not even 2 square cm... the heat from a light bulb concentrated into an area not even 2 square cm... a few seconds of that is enough to do some serious damage to those .13 micron transistors.
If I were in your position, I'd probably be temped to try my best to get it replaced for free too... my current financial situation would get the best of my ethics. If you don't get it replaced, chalk it up as a learning experience... and learn from it... slow down when doing this kinda stuff, make sure everything is how it should be before powering on next time. These $80 mistakes will ad up :D
