And here is the current state: 7

That's my car on the left. The sign says ROAD CLOSED but the flash hit it so you can't read it.

Most of the ice is broken free by now, but I still can't get it to move forward.

Lol...that kid was funny. He had super-low bass coming out of the trunk, an AE shirt with the collar all the way up, super spiked/bleached hair, of course rich, and of course has a pimpin' Acura.

Judging by pics... Yes, you have a weak car. ;)

However, any car should be able to pull itself free. Go get a bag of salt and sprinkle liberally around tires and brakes.

That's what I've been doing.

Yep, 92 Sable, 140 HP V6. And that's not a lot of HP for a car that big. But it serves me well.

i had this happen before to me. tires just kept spinning in the ice and i kept making a bigger hole for myself. i ended up using warm water and salt to melt it, which is probably bad but i needed to get to an appointment. oh well.

That's not too bad, at least you're at home. Driving 500 km home from the city last night, I had to drive the final 130 km at 30 km/h becaue the roads looked like yours. Found out the cops had 'closed' the highway while I was on it. Dozens of cars in the ditch, and two of the three who blasted past me spun into the ditch solely because of speed. I could have skated the entire distance without difficulty.

That sounds pretty awful.

I got it out of the spot. I had to gas it really hard in reverse to do it. Now there are four big grooves in the ice where my tires were before.

However, I still can't use my car, because it's inside the closed off area!

Hmm, maybe I'll just take the liberty of moving the cones myself.

I'd say the street. My car was stuck pretty good but I got it out now, but that street is AWFUL. I'm glad I called and got it closed off, because SOMEBODY was going to hit my car eventually from swerving out of those potholes.

heh heh heh.. It's around 0 degrees... How hard would it be to make a form around each of someone's tires... fill them with water... let it freeze. :D

The mailman admitted to almost hitting my car, and then, while I was taking pictures, some punk kid from the rich Catholic high school came flying down the road in his Acura, hit a huge hole and messed up his front end.

I'm not sure if the tires are spinning or not, I'm the only one around, can't tell myself.

lol... look, if your engine revs and speedometer are going up, and you AREN'T moving, then your tires are spinning. sheesh.

and go to the hdw store and buy some lock de-icer or windshield de-icer, the spray on stuff. keep a bottle of it in your trunk. that'll work if salt isn't available.

Yeah I know, common sense, just wasn't thinking straight. So what would happen if the tires physically couldn't spin and you gassed it?

Lol I'll be sure to take pics of me picking up the cone.

if you're in an automatic, the torque converter will just slip until your transmission fluid overheats and goes thermonuclear. if you're in a manual you will fry the clutch or stall the engine.

This is interesting. Lets do some math.

Problem: Car's tires are frozen in ~1 inch of ice. Question: What is the minimum torsional power required to break free and what car would be needed to meet this requirement?

Of course I have know idea if I worded that right or even how to attempt to answer it but I'm sure someone here does. :D

This depends on so many random variables that's its pointless to even calculate.

Engineer's answer: 0 lb-ft. Get some warm water and salt instead.

chances are high that the torque converter would make enough of an awful sound that you'd stop before doing any damage. Chances are also high that you'd stall the engine before burning the clutch on a manual, but with the way SOME people drive, who knows.

PSA: If your car's so stuck that revving the car and releasing the clutch at a moderate pace stalls your engine....holding the clutch partially engaged to keep the engine from dying is a BAD idea.
