OK so at my school we have a recycling center where the computer management group throws out "bad" parts.... so i was rumaging thru the piles today when i came across a maxtor drive that was marked as dead..... so disregarding this warning i took it back to my room and plugged it into my rig.... i go thru the bios to detect new ide devices and it says its a 30GB hard drive!!!!! so i was like score..... a free 30gb hard disk... so i am running scan disk right now.... ill update later

P.S.
i was also wondering if i could recover any deleted files from it... it was originally used as a ghost drive and i wanted to find out what kinda stuff was on the drive.... but it does kinda work... and its also still under warranty... i dont know if i can get it replaced tho... cause i think its a dell oem drive.... any advice would be greatly appreciated as well as bumps!!!!!!

I thought your title said

<< "OMFG i just made one of the best friends of my life!!!!!!!" >>

😀

at first i thought your thread title read "one of the best friends of my life" then i read your post about a hard drive and almost laughed my ass off at what a loser you were.

Then I reread the title and thought about what a moron I am.

Nice find. 🙂

d00d that's what I thought at first too!! 😱

I heard Norton had a program for recovering data from a drive after it's been formatted or something. There are programs that cost about $20 that do this but the names have escaped my mind for now 😱 BTW... Lucky bastard, I just paid $45 for mine 😉

That's just the way it reads I guess! I thought the same thing, then after reading was wondering if the HD was his new best friend or what??!

<< I read it as friends also. It was sorta like that thread in hot deals the other day

ROTFLMAO!!!

well... i am just gonna format the thing.... its kinda slow... it might be a 5400rpm drive but it kinda works.... its just really slow but its a maxtor...

Get one of those hard drive testing programs and check the life of it before you put any data. The progam should be able to give a good ideal on any damage

well i saw a guy literally throw the drive into one of the bins.... and when i fdisk it... it gets to 4% when its testing drive integrity...

it probably has some bad sectors, it could take hours to find them all and mark them, but it will probably work, for a while
that is probably why it was marked "bad" and thrown away 😀

don't worry, free = good 😉

it wasnt marked "bad" it was marked "dead"... do u think i can get it replaced by maxtor? i think its still under warranty..... they have a 3 year warranty dont they?
