OMFG I HATE MS!!!

I must be missing something... Why the fierce loyalty to Windows 98 and the like? Virtually every new PC sold today that comes with Windows, comes with XP. Windows 98 is not sold through common retail channels. It is not supported by Microsoft. Hardware vendors are increasingly lacking driver support for Windows 9x. Unless my facts are grossly wrong, Windows 9x is a dying breed. And this doesn't take into account actual deficiencies that the older OS's display, relative to 2000 or XP.

So why should a game developer (or any software company for that matter) retool their product to work on a legacy operating system? Simply to appease the minority of users? That's not commercially viable. If the bottom line objective is profit - which it undoubtedly is - then the costs to port a program to an older OS and all that entails, and to provide technical support for OS specific issues, all for the benefit of a user base that is decreasing (and will only decrease), that doesn't make any sense whatsoever economically.

As far as this Halo2/Vista matter, that appears to me as pure marketing at work:

Want to play the best game? Then you'll need the best operating system!

Doesn't lure me in since I'm hardly a die-hard fan of gaming. Minesweeper, the AoE series, and Lemonade Tycoon are all I need. But I certainly can't fault Microsoft in projecting that message, regardless of its inherent truth or lack thereof.

LOL.

For I remember just a year ago, Win2K was the dominant OS. No in just a little over a year later, XP has completly surpassed Win2K.

On campus, we keep track of which OS's are being used.

Of the 12,xxx computer's on campus, 34 are Linux, 62 are MacOSX, 14 Win98, and 36 WinME. The rest are WinXP.

Next year people using any Windows OS are required to use WinXP. If you can't afford it, we have tons of free copies of Linux. LOL

The people still decide on which OS they like. Although I like OSX, a few of the people on campus that have it, do not like it. 😕

What, you doing this just so you can be included in the class action lawsuit against Microsoft selling bug-filled software to consumers and forcing you to be beta-testers?

Seriously, Microsoft is using DirectX 10 as leverage to upgrade, and that's about it. Recent game I bought this year still supported Windows 98. And last I checked, DirectX 9 is available for Windows 98. So why can't DirectX 10 be released for XP? Because Microsoft knows that hardly anyone would pay money just to upgrade away from XP.

QFT !

I was just about to post that exact idea before I read your post.

Yeah, but XP was actually an UPGRADE from Win2k, and was a better OS overall. Vista looks like XP SP3, and not much else.

??

Having XP SP2 and 2k on computers side by side, I can safely say that the only thing that XP has that I miss on 2k is the windows picture and fax viewer.

No actually I'm not... Being that I'm in the business of selling PC's and servicing them, I find it prudent to be up to date and familiar with the current Windows OS's...

As for this class-action, no I am not part of it, nor was I aware of it.

dude, you assume WAAAAY too much

🙁 Going on with my life long and miserable path of assumptions, I am going to assume that you have read my full of assumptions and broken hopes YAGT thread, right ?

I was wondering when you'd show up.
I did read the thread, and it amused me for many a week. Thanks!

i personally think that they should release it for both xp and vista. maybe throw in some "special content" of some sort for vista users though. not everyone will have vista the day halo 2 comes out and a lot of people still use xp.

think about it, windows xp is...old. 5-6 years i think. i think it is time to move on, but they still should release it for xp too.

I refuse to buy ANY new MS OS until at least SP1 is made available. Anything prior to that is simply more beta testing.

vista will have directx 10 as a minimum. halo 2 will use directx 10.

how is this any different than the next mario on the revolution, or the next metal gear solid on ps3, or halo 3 on xbox360?

man, i remember back in the day when people moaned and complained about win95 being too mac like and how MS was alienating their win 3.11 customers. Same thing was said about WinXP, same thing is being said for WinVista, same thing will be said for blackcomb (or whatever it's called now).

I dont see how a port needs to use shaders an order of magnitude more complex than the original game.

The Xbox only supports PS 1.4

Yes, XP is old, but, as previously mentioned, Vista doesn't appear to be much of an upgrade. The old NT based OS is becoming outdated, and there's only so much MS can add before they have to completely change the OS structure (i.e. Win 9x to Win 9x 2nd Edition). Vista is just the last leg of the NT platform in my opinion.

Yes, some people will cling to their old O/S's.

I had an elderly client who wanted me to delete Windows XP on her brand new system and install Windows95 because that is what she liked and was used to. (this is where a "retard smiley" would be nice, lol)

I coulda gouged her for a couple hundred but instead taught her how to use XP and she continues to refer new customers to me.

I dread a new O/S upgrade but will end up using it because I have been part of the borg and as we all know from Star Trek, there is no escaping the borg.

give the customer what they want. if they want DOS, give them DOS.

personally, i use what I need.

Since I'm into web development and unix admin, that's mostly what I use.

as a desktop too 😀

every new dell, gateway etc will have it. it will become mainstream like xp. everyone didnt want to goto xp. and now its standard. give it time and everyone will have it. its just new and no one has it. it will be the new mainstream thus this is such a worthless problem to worry about.

i actually prefer win2k over XP, it doesnt have all the "let me show you what to do" features that piss me off. sadly, win2k has compatibility issues with some games, so i have xp on my rig
