google had to do this manually, how would all that nonsense about people typing george w. bush and miserable failure at once have any effect on the whitehouse homepage where the phrase miserable failure doesn't ever show up?

you obviously don't know pagerank works

please explain the intricacies of pagerank to my feeble mind.

i thought a page would at least have to contain the words that are searched for, for it to be #1.

The best explaination is given by google, but I forgot the webpage. Pagerank basically takes into account how often a webpage is visited, how many other websites refer to that webpage, and some other stuff. As you can see from the link in the first post, people with webpages with the words "miserable failure" have be linking to his bio. Get enough of these webpages and page rank will assume that his bio has something to do with the words "miserable failure."

regardless of political stance, no one is concerned that the results of a google search can be influenced so relatively easy? take a fringe group of internet fanatics to put links connecting GB to adult material, and every school kid who types in something to do a report on the President gets links to adult sites...wouldn't this be a problem?

This is called "google bombing". A guy I went to high school with was supposedly the first to do it.

Linky

Although it doesn't work anymore, talentless hack was the first one of these.

This is the reason that you never see anti-Church of Scientology links on google.
