considering that really hasn't even happened with DVD, unless you only buy shitty Full screen transfers at Wally World, you'll be waiting a long time. sales are consistent enough, and several can indeed be had below 10 bucks.

the ave. price I've paid is ~$17 per disc

here, check this out

how do those prices compare to general new releases on DVD over the previous 10 years? and just so you know, amazon's reported 30% savings on the standard price is bunk. Just shop around and you'll see that everything you've ever believed about BD pricing has been FUD.

The only movies I've paid $17 for this decade have been the Futurama movies, and that was release week.
Then you were a late adopter of DVD too. Even though DVD was technically "available" since '96, I paid damn-near $40 after tax for The Prince of Egypt and A Bug's Life back in '99. At least The Matrix was cheaper, but it was an exception to the $35 "rule" back then. FWIW, all three were AMAZING experiences on DVD (I had a kick-ass Sigma Designs RealMagic Hollywood+ decoder card outputting to VGA/TV).

Yep, you will always pay an early adopter's fee on every new technology. DVD's were expensive when they first came out.

My first experience with Blu ray was at costco, watching Wall-E on a 52" SONY I believe, simply amazing, then I saw Dark Knight on a 17" laptop with 1920x1080 res, jaw dropping,

i've been contemplating getting a Blur ray drive and signing up for Net Flix.

You work in the porn industry, don't you?

This xmas I got a 40" Sony Bravia with a Blu Ray Drive and a Home Theater System.

I recalibrated the home theater system (some of our speakers aren't optimally positioned, unfortunately) and omg it sounds phenomenal.

Now, I haven't got any blu ray disks, which is kinda funny, but the DVDs we have watched look pretty damn good on that HDTV. And the sound is brilliant as well.

Btw, does anyone have a link to the official blu ray/hd thread? I was looking for it, but I have no idea where it went in the transition to the new forums.

When I have enough money for a decent setup I'm thinking of getting a blu ray player to try this out. not sure how many movies here come in blu ray though. Think it's still mostly DVD. I'm sure it beats the quality of most downloaded movies. I wish there was a way to download super high quality movies as an AVI without using torrents and all sort of random sources. I would even pay for it.

i'm still waiting for a BD movie to WOW me with superior quality. I've seen lots of them now and it's maybe a slight difference over upconverted DVD, imo.

avi?
iew.
you mean h264...

any avi that is downloadable in a reasaonble amount of time looks like sh*t, mpeg4 doesn't have the compression level required to do hd in any decent form.

as for bluray, rent, the disc prices need time to get down to a reasonable level.

Try hooking one up to a high quality LCD with an HDMI cable instead of the old yellow RCA/composite connector.

I'm really digging what I'm reading about the old 60's epics that have been re-scanned.

ZULU is in blu ray, so is How the West was Won (omg that looks epic)

If the Japanese peeps converted The Seven Samurai into Blu Ray my life would be complete.

How do they convert blue movies to blu ray and make them better quality? I don't quite get that. If the movie was on VHS for example, how does converting to another format increase the quality?

Yup Link

Personally, I want all the Charles Heston classics in Blu Ray

I think it depends on the quality of the original source material and how much effort they put into the transfer. It's not like they are going to use an actual VHS copy as the source (at least, I would hope not).

lol, good 35mm frames are >20M Pixels in resolution. you don't take the vhs and stick that on brd.

Too bad the OP wasted his first blu ray movie experience on a Jet Li movie. 😀

And yes, I realize this thread is nearly a year old.

Blu rays are for amateurs, you should be buying and collecting actual 35mm movie reels and watch them in your personal commercial theater like I do.

I'm watching stuff on a 40" LCD HDTV. Don't make me feel insecure. 🙁

Watching Breakfast Club (HDDVD) ~95"

There is only 3 human beings in my household.

There is a

19" CRT
22" CRT
29" CRT
42" 1080p LCD
50" 720p Plasma
1080p projector shooting ~95"

Wish I can afford a theatre and a film library + the support system to keep the film pristine.
