Omega drivers

do the omega modded driver have any benefit over the catalyst drivers

Depends who you ask, some people swear they have better IQ over WHQL drivers, I have tried them in the past and didnt see anything special about them or other modded drivers. Best thing to do is test for yourself.

No.

Indeed quite the reverse. Firstly, the drivers are not modifed. That is impossible without the source code which is obviously closely guarded. The setup may be modified to simply toggle different existing options during installation rather than afterwards. Some combinations may not be enabled by default or allowed via the CCC because they would cause failure of certification or other problems. In some cases performance might be increased slightly at the cost of reduced quality or such as. In any case, if there is some setting which may be better toggled on or off for a certain app and demands a more comprehensive GUI to do it (as opposed to manual registry editing), then best to use a proggy like ATI Tray Tools to do it. That way, the ATI defaults are easily restored rather than relying blindly upon those of some hobbyist.

Omegadrivers good for XP, some say better IQ- when I used them ages ago (we're talking years) I actually got better performance, I didn't take any screen shots for IQ though. You might aswell try them and see if you like them.....if not switch back to the Catalyst.

I used the Omega drivers with an x1950 Pro AGP because the official ATI drivers didn't work correctly with this AGP video card. After installing the Omega drivers everything worked perfectly!!! 🙂

Ditto, for some reason the official ATI drivers didin't work for me either but the Omegas were just fine.

I like Omega drivers, I haven't used them since I moved over to Vista but there was a time when I was heavily doing 3dmark benchmarking and there was one version I was using of Omegas that would give me a pretty large boost over the standard ATI ones. I always thought the image quality looked a lot better too. Actually need to look at their site again to see if they have Vista ones although most of them have to be certified now.

If that were the case, would it not be better to then find out what the difference is and make the change yourself and therefore know exactly how to use the latest 'n' greatest official package rather than waiting or possibly introducing other problems with a more altered setup than necessary?

For instance, I currently have an AGP card which is not included in AMD's package -ostensibly because it would then not pass certification. I can either wait for the AIB to make it available or I can simply edit the setup myself. Likewise, I have encountered issues which the support of neither were helpful in resolving yet other users have provided the solution which I was then able to apply myself with a simple registry edit. "Now I know, and knowing is half the battle". Yo Joe! 😀

yah this was about the case for me too.

I think the omegas had their heyday in the 9800pro to x1950xtx days, since the 2900, 3000 and windows vista days, the catalyst have preformed better. Especially considering the release of cata 8.3 and 8.47 there's no way an omega driver could preform better unless it is based off one of these versions.

I enjoyed getting omegas from guru3d.com back in the day because it came bundled with ati tray tools. this 1.4mb program that fits on a floppy is the most intense graphics software i've ever used. It has more options than nvidia control panel or ccc, (like rivatuner) yet it is magically 1/40th the size.

I would recommend CCC's newest drviers if you have newer ati hardware, omega if you have older.

I was thinking Omega drivers are dead. My mate has these in his old box x1800 gto i would bet that they did perform better than the catalyst in 2004, the last year we were playing DOOM3 **Loved the game when will DOOM4 be out**

For the last 5 ATI cards I had I used the OMega drivers. Definitely gave me better performance...not sure about IQ...and it didn't need CCC.
