oh joyous xD, the proprietary new memory type from Olympus who wants to "pull a sony"

maybe it has faster write speeds? CF is faster and half the price, and offer larger capacity

maybe it is small? yes, but we already have MMC/SD, and small means fragile and easy to lose

maybe olympus just wants you to shell out 50% more $$$?

bingo

but yeah, whats the point of including a 16mb card with a 4mp camera when they know its too small so u'd have to buy a bigger card anyway. and in this case, even more expensive than memory stick and cant use in PDAs or MP3 players, ahhhh capitalism supreme

There are some places that sell them for ~$50 (do not know about shipping) and quite a few in ~$53 - $56 range.

I picked up a Olympus C-5050, I ended up going with a Viking 512MB CF, the cost difference was immense for $79.99 at the time, the 512MB was like $267 at the time ouch!!. I thouht it was too small, I would end up losing it.

i bought a camera with this memory format for someone as a gift on accident. i would have never sanctioned a propietary format as assinine as xD had i had known. if you are caught having to use this format, this is a good deal. Dell online also sells it.

It's not proprietary, but only Olympus and Fuji use it/make it right now. The idea is xD is faster and smaller than Compactflash, but it's also "dumb" so it's cheap to manufacture. MMC, Smartmedia, et al. have additional logic circuitry built in that Compactflash and xD don't. I paid <$100 for a 256mb xD card, so it's definitely comparable (cheaper, actually) than similarly-sized memory formats.

I think I read in a post somewhere that sams club has a 256MB xD card for ~$85.00. If you don't have a membership, it's an extra 5% on top of that, but still a decent deal. Most places I've seen are above $100 for this card. I just used my MSN rewards and picked one up from Ritz camera for $109.
