Sorry, but the basic SLR designs that C and N make are proven and have been around for decades. A pro photographer would get laughed out of the room if he showed up with this odd Olympus.

And my previous question is still valid. C and N have hundreds of lenses from which to choose. What will you do with this Olympus?

Who the fvck said anything about this being a pro camera?

I'm not bashing C and N. I'm not arguing that they are both THE monsters of the industry. I'm simply pointing out a new camera. You can argue if you want. There's no point.

..not to mention a good pro photographer could care less what others are thinking. I'd imagine they would let the pictures speak for themselves.

I think there is a strong possibility that optional EVF will be a standard feature in a DSLR in the future. There are just too many situations where it can be helpful. I've got a 20D and I'd be lying if I claimed that I never could have benefited from live preview.

Also, as the quality of small LCD (or other tech) improves, the feasibility of judging accurate exposure and focus becomes more of a possibility. Put 640x480 resolution on a 2.5 or 3" LCD and you've got the equivalent of 1mp Bayer or so. I think the LCD starts to become much more useful at this point.

I guess it is a DSLR. Fugly at that! Bet you can't buy "L" lenses for it either! Where's the upgrade path in that?

Um who wants L lenses when you have lenses that are better than L lenses?

LOL! What would those be? Olympic lenses? Konica?

Zeiss maybe man. And some of Nikon's are great too. But please, lay off what you're smoking.

That's why Olympus cleaned house in the TIPA lens awards in 04 or 05. I don't remember. They are called Zuiko Digital. Need a lineup? Many more coming out too...

http://www.olympus-esystem.com/dea/products/lens/

They also won the award for the best telephoto zoom, and the best line for overall image quality lineup over at luminous landscapes.

Ah yes, that's the article I was looking for.

Best Lens Available for DSLRs: Olympus Digital Zuiko 50mm ?/2 Macro

As soon as someone buys the notebook in my sig I'll have that on order. 🙂

And you're saying this after you've actually read about lenses from other brands? Or are you just so worked up with your brand loyalty? Or is objectivity just not your thing?

Oh, I certainly give credit to Zeiss and Nikon. Both offer lenses that I wish Canon would offer.

I just totally disagree with you about this new Olympus. I don't think it's a true DSLR and for the beginner who might want to add 3, 4, 5 high-end lenses after a while, I don't think the Olympus offers the best lens upgrade path. Canon or Nikon do a much better job. If people want a P&S, they'll buy one. If people want a DSLR, they'll buy a real one! As for me, I carry both.

I've read the article...looked at the pictures.

I still see no mention of an EVF. It can display the image on the LCD for focusing, framing, etc. But it doesn't say anything about an EVF. The picture shows that it is an OVF.

I see nothing in the picture that denotes an EVF/OVF "blending" to have both.

So....anyone?

It's in the first paragraph of the PMA article...

This ground-breaking innovation enables framing of shots without the need to look through the ocular.

What does that have to do with an EVF?

Also...how groundbreaking can that be? Every P&S has been able to frame a shot with the LCD....? They aren't making any sense.

I'd hate to try and hold that thing with a 70-200 f2.8 lens slapped on the front.

Looks like an awkward little thing. (even worse than the 350XT)

I have the same camera, and I can honestly say I've never missed having live preview. I mean, why? The beauty of an SLR is to look through the OVF, hit the shutter button, and more less get what you want. I frankly think I would look like a total ass standing there with my big black DSLR, holding it up and out a foot away from my body, trying to look through its tiny 1.8-2" LCD. Makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Looks interesting but none of the links specify the crop factor. I am guessing that due to power consumption (and the fact that the lens start at 14mm), it'll be more than the 1.6x on the Rebel and D50/70.

I think you are too caught up in your appearance. There are plenty of situations where live preview can be useful.

1) Standing in a crowd and trying to get a picture over your head.
2) Taking a picture on the street at ground level w/o having to actually lay on the ground

I'm sure there are others too.

The crop factor on 4/3's systems is 2

No, I believe it's a 4/3 system, so it's more like a 2.0x crop. That 14-45 is a 28-90 35mm equivalent.

I should also point out that the 2x crop is one of the drawbacks as it does have more noise than its Canon and Nikon equivalents. The camera tops out at ISO1600.

Ouch. I thought my 1.6x was kind of a pain.

But that's half the fun/challenge IMO! Seeing the photo in your mind's eye, then rushing to climb rocks or risk getting trampled to get your shot before the subject moves or the sun goes down, etc.

I see he's ignoring the EVF issue still.

I edited my OP. The EVF was a rumor. Thank you, and please move along if your going to hate on anything besides C and N. You'll fit in with some of the folks at fredmiranda really well.

Yep. Noise will be a big problem since it's such a small sensor. And I bet it's a CCD instead of the better low-light CMOS.

But it's good that it doesn't utilize an EVF. Optical is much better.

90% of the DSLR community that buys C or N must be wrong!

Uhm...no it isn't. There is no prism in that camera.
Whether a camera is an SLR or not has nothing at all to do with whether it has a prism. The mirror in front of the image sensor is what makes a camera an SLR. And the E330 will have that. From the diagrams, the LCD and the EVF are driven by a second, lower-resolution sensor. A system of mirrors (the on in front of the main viewfinder moveable, making the camera a true SLR) allows both sensors to have full TTL metering and focusing.

You know. This thread has changed my opinion about you 100 times over. Nobody said anything about bad equipment with C and N. I'm talking about the elitest attitude some of you pricks get about it.

Okay, I do apologize. It's 12:46 AM, and I should have been in bed an hour ago. But yeah, two years at the DPreview.com Canon Lens Forum turns one into a pixel-peeping "L" snob. I admit it.

Also...I haven't said anything bad about your precious Olympus. Just pointed out that you are rather fanboyish about them.

I'm sure it will be a good camera. I had an E-20N before I got my 20D. It was a great camera. The only problem with it was the non-removable lens.

The problems with this E-330 is for one, with a 2.0x crop factor it's going to be hard to get a true wide-angle shot out of it.

It's small and doesn't look like it will have that great of a grip for any pro stuff. I can't see the tripod mount...not sure if it's lined up center-lens. The flash mount is in a strange spot.

The lenses I'm sure will be good.

And the pros who use Contax and Zeiss laugh at the people using Nikon or Canon systems. And the purists still using film laugh at digital.

Seems to me that any PRO photographer would compare the images and evalute only on that rather than on the brand.

There are some wide angles on the Zuiko lens roadmap. Pricey, but I guess you get what you pay for like with all lenses. The E-300 grip will supposedly fit the 330, we'll see.
