Olympics scandal: judging error costs Korean all-around gold

This is not surprising to me. Gymnastics judging is subjective, judges were basically just eyeballing. This gave a lot room for intentional favors and unintentional errors. If 2 guys make the same error on the floor, judges can give one guy a 9.1 and another guy a 8.8. This is exactly what happened there in Athens. Once again the image of Olympics is tamed.

That sucks. But what you're describing (one judge giving a 9.1 and another giving a 8.8) is the reason why they have so many judges, and they drop the highest and lowest scores. This is just a mistake, not a difference in opinion.

The article said that it was the start value of one of the routines that was off. Not that the judge gave one guy a 9.1 and the other an 8.8.

After reviewing a tape of the all-around, FIG officials determined Yang should have been awarded a start value of 10. With the extra 0.10, he would have finished with 57.874 points and defeated Hamm by 0.051

Either way, the South Korean's didn't argue the score during the meet, which is what they should have done.

Mistakes happen... It wasn't a scandal...

If I was Hamm and I won the gold because of a math error or human error I would probably give
the gold to the other guy.

Those guys do awesome work and no needs to be ashamed of their performances
whether they win gold, silver or bronze in those competitions.

like I said, you never know whether that "mistake" is intentional or unintentional. One of the 3 suspended judges is an American (at least that's what media is speculating) and he is the chairman of the judging panel. Go figure.

Is this a case of hamm simply not deserving the gold, or merely the case of a bad judging call - somethign that always can happen in these sorts of events? By this I mean that maybe Hamm got gyped out of a point earlier too.

Was this a common error, or total negligence on the part of the judges? It seems like the Koreans in charge of protesting screwed up here too.

I read that that anorexic russian chick (EAT SOME F**KING FOOD) who tried to get overall gold this year was in Sydney and she did the vault and then screwed it up. They realized it was too low, so the officials raised it, and she didn't get another go. Now THAT is not cool.

This is a case of the "start value" being figured wrong. Not a case of low scores being given.

Even the article you post explains this, yet you keep trying to press this conspiracy theory. Why?

In Athens, however, there were so signs of impropriety. The scoring error was made with one event left, and there was no way the judges could have known the significance of reducing Yang's start value on the parallel bars.

Good gawd, give it up already. The start value of the routine was lowered BEFORE the crucial event.

This is no different then the Giants-49'ers at the end of last years (or was it 2 yrs ago) football season. Even if the 49ers could, they would never give up that victory.

Yes, she should definitely eat some food. But your other point is incorrect. She was given a chance to redo the vault but by that time she had already fallen on the uneven bars and couldn't possibly win regardless, so she decided to pout and refused to re-vault. However, let's not forget that this was a mistake pointed out during the competition and corrected for other athletes about to perform. If the height was determined to be incorrect 2 days after the fact, I doubt anything would have been done either.


IMO, the only ones to blame here (assuming a legitimate mistake) are the South Koreans. How could they not check and recheck something so important to there overall standings in the competition? ...and figuring it out 2 days after the fact even puts an exclamation point on that fact.

THe second after Hamm won that gold, I was like DAMN! Awesome, but then I said... ya know, this always seems to happen for the USA, and never any other country. How convenient.

Oh crap. You think it happens only for the US, because when it does our press goes wild for it, but not when it happens for others.

And let's not forget the last winter Olympics, where a French figure skating judge admitted to conspiring to give the US low scores.
